It helps us grow and keeps our immune system strong. It also helps us see.

There are two main ways to get it. One way is from animal foods. These contain retinoids, which are special compounds. The other way is from plants. Plants have carotenoids, like beta-carotene.

Animals can turn these into vitamin A. Some animals, like cats, cannot do this. They must eat animal foods to get it.

Inside your eye, vitamin A helps you see light. It joins with a protein called opsin. Together, they make rhodopsin. This molecule helps you see in low light and see colors.

Your liver stores vitamin A in tiny droplets. This storage helps you stay healthy for months. If you do not have enough, you might have night blindness. This means it is hard to see in the dark.
