This happened from 1947 until 1954. He was the first person to hold this role under a new system called the Fourth Republic. Auriol was a member of a political group called the SFIO. This group believed in socialist ideas. His life was filled with many big changes for his country. He worked hard to help different groups of people get along.

His journey into politics started many years before he became president. Auriol was born in Revel in 1884. His father, Jacques Antoine Auriol, worked as a baker.

After studying law, Auriol became a lawyer in the city of Toulouse. He joined the Chamber of Deputies in 1914 to represent the area of Muret. He also served as the Mayor of Muret for many years. He even worked as a Minister of Finance and a Minister of Justice. These jobs helped him learn how to lead a nation.

During a very difficult time in history, Auriol showed great courage. In 1940, he was one of eighty leaders who voted against giving too much power to the government. Because of this choice, he was placed under house arrest. He did not give up on his beliefs. In 1942, he escaped to join the French Resistance. This was a group of people fighting for France. Later, he traveled to London and then to the United States. In 1944, he helped represent France at a big meeting in Bretton Woods.

Being president was a very heavy job for Auriol. He was elected on January 16, 1947, with 452 votes.

During his term, France faced many hard challenges. There were many strikes where workers stopped working to ask for changes. There was also a war in Indochina. France also dealt with many fights in places like Morocco and Algeria. Auriol tried to keep the country stable during these times. He even helped France become a founding member of NATO and the Council of Europe.

Even after he left the presidency, Auriol stayed active in French life. He did not run for president again in 1954. Instead, he became an elder statesman who wrote about politics. He joined the Constitutional Council in 1958. However, he later left that group to show he did not agree with new rules. Auriol married Michelle Aucouturier in 1911, and they had a son named Paul. Vincent Auriol died in a Paris hospital on January 1, 1966. He was buried in the town of Muret.
