He represented the USSR in international athletics competitions. Saneyev was famous for his incredible ability to leap long distances. He won a total of four Olympic medals during his career. Three of these were gold medals, earned in 1968, 1972, and 1976. He also earned a silver medal at the 1980 Olympics. Beyond the Olympics, he set the world record for the triple jump on three separate occasions.

The triple jump is a specific event in track and field athletics. It requires an athlete to perform a sequence of three distinct leaps. The athlete must maintain momentum and balance through each phase of the jump. Saneyev began his athletic journey in 1956 at the Gantiadi boarding school. He initially trained in the high jump under his first coach, Akop Kerselyan. In 1964, Kerselyan advised him to specialize in the triple jump. This change in focus allowed Saneyev to develop his unique skills.

Saneyev's career was marked by consistent dominance in European competitions. He won the European Championships in 1969 and 1974. He also secured seven European Athletics Indoor Championships between 1970 and 1977. Within his own country, he was a frequent champion. He won the USSR Championships in 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1975, and 1978. These victories showed his ability to compete at the highest levels for many years.

His most famous achievements occurred during the 1968 Summer Olympics. On 17 October 1968, Saneyev won the gold medal. On that same day, he set two different world records. First, he jumped 17.23 meters. Then, he improved his own mark to 17.39 meters. Four years later, he set a third world record in his home region. In Sukhumi, he reached a distance of 17.44 meters. These numbers established him as a premier athlete in the sport.

The 1980 Olympics provided a much more difficult and controversial experience. Saneyev entered the competition hoping for a fourth gold medal. However, the event was complicated by judging issues. The Estonian athlete Jaak Uudmäe won the gold medal with a jump of 17.35 meters. Saneyev took the silver medal with a jump of 17.24 meters. The Brazilian jumper João Carlos de Oliveira finished third with 17.22 meters. During this final, several jumps by other athletes were discarded by officials. Protests were made, but the results remained the same.

Saneyev received many prestigious honors for his athletic excellence. In 1969, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. In 1972, he received the Order of Lenin. He was also given the Order of Friendship of Peoples in 1976. Because of his status, he was selected as an Olympic torch bearer in 1980. After retiring from competition, he served as the head of the USSR jumping team for four years. He also worked at the Dynamo Tbilisi club, where he had trained.

In the early 1990s, Saneyev faced significant life changes. The breakup of the Soviet Union and a civil war in Georgia led to him losing his job. He and his family moved to Australia to start a new life. During this transition, he worked various odd jobs, including delivering pizza. He eventually found stability as a physical education teacher at St Joseph's College. He also served as a jumping coach at the New South Wales Institute of Sport. Even in retirement, he maintained his interest in science and nature. He had graduated from several universities and enjoyed growing subtropical plants like lemons and grapefruits. Saneyev died in Sydney on 3 January 2022 at the age of 76.
