Viktor Mihály Orbán is a prominent Hungarian politician and lawyer.
Orbán's early life shaped his political views. He was born on May 31, 1963. His family lived in Alcsútdoboz and later moved to Felcsút in 1973. His father worked in the machinery department at a local farm collective. After high school, Orbán completed his military service. During this time, he witnessed the declaration of martial law in Poland in 1981. This experience changed his views from a supporter of the Communist regime to an opponent.
Orbán studied law at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest starting in 1983. He joined a residential college called the Lawyers' Special College of Social Sciences. This group allowed students to study political science outside of the socialist curriculum. During his studies, he met future political allies like László Kövér. In 1988, Orbán helped found the Alliance of Young Democrats, known as Fidesz.
His first period as prime minister began in 1998. He led a coalition government with the Hungarian Democratic Forum and the Independent Smallholders' Party. At age 35, he was the second youngest prime minister in Hungary. During this term, Hungary joined NATO. His government also worked to reduce inflation and the fiscal deficit. However, his administration faced challenges, including a bribery scandal involving Lockheed Martin. After losing the 2002 election, he led the opposition for eight years.
Since returning to power in 2010, Orbán has implemented significant changes. He describes his political philosophy as "illiberal democracy." This approach involves shifting the country away from traditional liberal democratic norms. In 2013, his government passed major amendments to the Constitution of Hungary.
Orbán's leadership has faced intense criticism from international organizations. The European Union has had conflicts with his government over rule-of-law issues. In 2019, Fidesz was suspended from the European People's Party (EPP). Fidesz eventually left the EPP in March 2021 following a dispute over bylaws.
His policies also focus heavily on national identity and migration. Orbán is a strong critic of how the European Union handles migration. He also opposes same-sex marriage.
