In 1971, Sony made the first U-matic system. This was the first way to use a videocassette. It was used by schools and newsrooms. Later, many homes bought VCRs. In the 1980s, many families owned them. Two main types fought for sales. These were Betamax and VHS. VHS became very popular.

Some VCRs are sensitive to the weather. If they get too damp, moisture can form inside. This is called condensation. Moisture can make the tape stick to the spinning parts. This can break the machine or the tape. VCRs became less popular when DVDs arrived. Most people now use digital tools to watch videos.

The VCR pulls the tape out of its plastic shell. The tape passes over a spinning drum. This drum has small parts called heads. These heads read or write the video and sound onto the tape. Some high-end machines even have a "flying erase head." This tiny part is only 40 microns wide. It erases old signals right before new ones are written. This helps make the new recording very clean.

Recording video has a long history. In 1956, a company named Ampex made the first successful professional recorder. It used very wide tape that was two inches across. Later, in 1959, Toshiba created a new recording method called helical scan. This method was used in machines with large tape spools. By 1963, the first home video recorder called the Telcan was made in the UK. It was built by Michael Turner and Norman Rutherford. However, it was very expensive and could only record for 20 minutes.

Newer systems made video easier for everyone to use. Sony showed a prototype for a videocassette in 1969. In September 1971, they released the U-matic system in Tokyo. This was the first commercial videocassette format. It used tape that was 3/4-inch wide. Later, a big competition happened between two formats. One was Sony's Betamax, which came out in 1975. The other was JVC's VHS. By 1985, about 30 percent of homes in the United Kingdom owned a VCR.

Even though they were popular, VCRs had some hard jobs. They were very sensitive to heat and moisture. If a machine gets damp, water can form on the inside parts. This is called condensation. Moisture can make the tape stick to the spinning drum. This can damage the tape or the machine. Eventually, VCRs became less common. In the early 2000s, DVDs became much more popular for watching movies. By 2016, the last maker of VHS machines, Funai Electric, stopped making them.

These machines allow for a process called time shifting, where a user records a television program to watch at a more convenient time. VCRs also play prerecorded tapes, which became widely available for purchase or rental during the 1980s and 1990s. The most popular format for these tapes was the VHS videocassette. While VCRs were once common in households, their popularity declined significantly during the 2000s. In July 2016, Funai Electric, the last remaining manufacturer, ceased production of VHS recorders.

The mechanism of a VCR relies on moving magnetic tape through a specialized internal system.

When a cassette is inserted, the machine pulls the magnetic tape from the plastic shell. The tape is then guided over a rotating drum containing video and audio heads. These heads read or write information onto the tape as it passes by. Some high-end models include a flying erase head integrated alongside the video and Hi-Fi heads.

This component is only 40 microns wide. It erases the previous signal immediately before the new signal is recorded. This process helps prevent chroma interference and allows for cleaner video inserts.

Video recording technology evolved through several distinct stages and formats. Early professional models used reel-to-reel tape spools rather than protective cassettes. In 1956, Ampex introduced the VRX-1000, the first commercially successful professional recorder. It used a two-inch (5.1 cm) wide tape and was primarily used by television networks. In 1959, Toshiba introduced helical scan, a new recording method. This method was first used in reel-to-reel videotape recorders (VTRs) before being applied to cassette tapes. By 1963, Philips released the EL3400, a 1-inch helical scan recorder designed for business and domestic users.

The transition to home video required more user-friendly formats. The Telcan, produced in the UK in 1963, was the first home video recorder. Developed by Michael Turner and Norman Rutherford, it was expensive and could only record for 20 minutes. Sony later released the CV-2000 in 1965, which was the first fully transistorized VCR intended for home use. In 1971, Sony introduced the U-matic system in Tokyo, which was the world's first commercial videocassette format.

U-matic used 3/4-inch (1.9 cm) wide tape and could play for 60 to 80 minutes. While successful in newsrooms and schools, its high cost prevented it from becoming a standard in most homes.

A major era of competition occurred during the "format war" between two main standards. Sony's Betamax was released in November 1975 and was considered technically sophisticated in its recording quality.

However, JVC's VHS format eventually achieved mass-market dominance. The impact of the VCR was massive; in the United Kingdom, 10% of households owned a VCR by 1982. This number grew to 30% by 1985, and more than half of British homes owned one by the end of the decade. This growth faced legal challenges in the early 1980s when US film companies argued that VCRs violated copyrights. The Supreme Court of the United States eventually ruled in Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios, Inc. that private use was allowable.

Despite their utility, VCRs were highly sensitive to environmental factors like temperature and humidity. If a machine moves from a hot to a cold environment, moisture can form on internal parts through condensation.

This moisture can increase friction between the tape and the rotating head drum. If a dew sensor fails to stop the machine, the tape might stick to the spinning drum and become extensively damaged. Some machines included a dew warning to prevent this. High-quality audio also required precise alignment. Because the paths of the video and Hi-Fi audio heads are discontinuous, the machine must perform head-switching. If the switching points are misaligned, it can result in a low-pitched buzzing sound in the audio.

The decline of the VCR was driven by the rise of digital and optical media. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, DVDs became the first universally successful optical medium for video playback.

As DVD recorders and digital video recorders dropped in price, the VCR became obsolete. In Canada, monthly shipments of DVD players surpassed VCR shipments in September 2001. In the United States, DVD rentals exceeded VHS rentals in June 2003. Although some manufacturers created VCR/Blu-ray combo players to accommodate existing tape collections, the era of the standalone VCR had largely ended.
