In the 1920s and 1930s, a new tool changed how scientists viewed matter. Researchers like Max von Laue and William L. Bragg showed that X-ray scattering could reveal crystal structures. Goldschmidt applied these X-ray methods to many common minerals at Oslo and Göttingen. By looking at how atoms were arranged, he formulated rules for grouping chemical elements. He published these important findings in a series titled *Geochemische Verteilungsgesetze der Elemente*. This work laid the foundation for how we classify elements based on their chemical behavior.
Life was difficult for Goldschmidt during the rise of the Nazi party. Although the University of Göttingen treated him well, he was unhappy with the treatment of non-Aryans. He resigned in 1935 and returned to Oslo, Norway. When Germany invaded Norway in 1940, his situation became much more dangerous. In October 1942, he was arrested by German occupying powers due to his Jewish heritage. He was sent to the Berg concentration camp and became seriously ill. He was eventually released and then rearrested, nearly being deported to Auschwitz. He was only saved because colleagues convinced the police that his scientific expertise was essential.
After escaping to Sweden, Goldschmidt was moved to England by a British intelligence unit in 1943. He worked at the Macaulay Institute for Soil Research and later at Rothamsted. At Rothamsted, his colleagues affectionately called him "Goldie." 
Victor Goldschmidt's legacy is preserved in many scientific honors and names. He was awarded the Wollaston Medal, which is the highest honor from the Geological Society of London. The mineral goldschmidtite (KNbO3) was named in his honor to recognize his contributions. Additionally, a mountain ridge in Spitsbergen called Goldschmidtfjella bears his name. An annual V. M. Goldschmidt Medal is also awarded by The Geochemical Society. His textbook, *Geochemistry*, was published in 1954, several years after his death in 1947. He remains a central figure in the history of Earth sciences.
