Long ago, volcanoes were active in the nearby hills. These volcanoes are now dormant, which means they are quiet. Still, the old volcanic activity created many hot springs. There are about 289 springs in the area. The water is full of minerals like lithium and sodium. Some springs are very hot, reaching 73 degrees C. Others are much cooler at 14 degrees C.

People have visited Vichy for health since Roman times. In the 1800s, many wealthy people came to stay. They stayed in grand houses and went to the opera.

During World War II, Vichy became a very important place. It was the capital for the French State government. This lasted for four years. After the war, the city became very rich again. In 2021, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This honors its famous baths and beautiful buildings.
