He was a professional defenceman, a player responsible for defending his team's zone. Fetisov achieved the rare status of being a member of the Triple Gold Club. This honors players who win the Stanley Cup, the World Championship, and an Olympic gold medal. He also belongs to the group that achieved the "Grand Slam of Ice Hockey." This requires winning the Stanley Cup, the World Championships, the Olympics, the World Junior Championship, and the Canada Cup. His career spanned playing, coaching, and high-level political leadership.

Fetisov's playing career began in the Soviet Union with HC CSKA Moscow. He debuted for their junior team at age sixteen in 1976. By the 1978–79 season, he joined the senior team in the Soviet Championship League. He was a standout player, earning the USSR Player of the Year title in 1982 and again in 1986.

After 13 seasons in the Soviet Union, he moved to the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the New Jersey Devils and the Detroit Red Wings. With Detroit, he won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1997 and 1998. He even brought the Stanley Cup to Moscow for the first time in 1997.

His transition to North America was a historic moment for the sport. For many years, Soviet players were prevented from joining the NHL. Fetisov faced immense resistance from Soviet officials when he requested to play abroad. He recalled being given an ultimatum by the Soviet Minister of Defence, Marshal Dmitry Yazov. Yazov told him to either apologize or be sent to Siberia. Eventually, the Soviet policy of glasnost allowed Fetisov to lead eight players into the NHL. This group included players like Igor Larionov and Sergei Makarov. This move broke a major barrier for European players.

Fetisov's success extended to international competitions and coaching. He served as a long-time captain for the Soviet Union national team. He won two Olympic gold medals in 1984 and 1988. He also earned seven World Championship gold medals between 1978 and 1990.

Beyond the rink, Fetisov moved into executive and political roles. Following the 2002 Olympics, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered him the position of Minister of Sport. He held various leadership posts in Russian sports administration until 2008.

Fetisov's life has included significant challenges and heavy responsibilities. In 1997, a limousine accident involving teammates caused serious injuries to his colleagues. He also faced personal loss when his brother, Anatoly, died in a car accident in 1985. In recent years, his political and sports roles have intersected with global conflicts. In 2022, the UK government sanctioned him during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Despite these complexities, his impact on the development of professional hockey remains profound.
