It sits in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The VLT has four main parts. We call these Unit Telescopes.

Each one has a large mirror. These mirrors are 8.2 meters wide. The telescopes have special names from the Mapuche people. They are Antu, Kueyen, Melipal, and Yepun.

These telescopes can work in different ways. They can look at stars one by one. They can also work together as one big tool. This is called an interferometer. This helps them see very tiny details. The VLT also has four smaller telescopes. We call these Auxiliary Telescopes. They can move to 30 different spots.

The VLT sees things that are very faint. It can see objects four billion times fainter than our eyes can. It has made many big discoveries. It saw a planet far away from its star. It also tracked stars near a black hole. It even saw light from a very far burst of energy.

It is run by the European Southern Observatory. The telescopes sit on Cerro Paranal in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. This site is a great place to look at the sky. The history of the VLT involves many years of careful work. The first Unit Telescope began operating in May 1998. It was offered to the science community on April 1, 1999. The other telescopes became ready in 1999 and 2000. This allowed the telescopes to work together for the first time. In 2004 and 2007, the smaller Auxiliary Telescopes were added.
