Your spine is made of many bones. Each bone is called a vertebra.
A vertebra has several main parts. The vertebral body is a thick part of bone. It carries much of your weight. The top and bottom of the body hold discs. These discs act like cushions between the bones.
Behind the body is the vertebral arch. This arch forms a hole called the vertebral foramen. This hole protects your spinal cord. Small holes called foramina let nerves pass through. These nerves carry messages to your body.
Vertebrae change shape depending on where they are. The seven cervical vertebrae are in your neck. They are small and light. These help your head move easily.

The laminae provide attachment points for the ligamenta flava, which are ligaments that connect adjacent vertebrae.
Seven different processes project from each vertebra to assist with movement and stability. One central process, the spinous process, extends backward to provide attachment for muscles and ligaments.
In the human vertebral column, vertebrae are organized into distinct regional groups. Most humans have thirty-three vertebrae, though the total can range from 32 to 35.

Understanding the variation in these bones helps scientists study how different animals move. For example, the structure of vertebrae differs greatly between aquatic animals and land-dwelling vertebrates. In humans, about 10% of the population shows variations in the number of vertebrae. Some people may have eleven thoracic vertebrae or six lumbar vertebrae instead of the standard count. These small changes in anatomy can influence how the spine handles stress and mobility.
