Venezuela faced a major political crisis from 2019 to 2023.

This crisis was about who should lead the country. The world was split between two different leaders. One leader was Nicolás Maduro, who was the sitting president. The other leader was Juan Guaidó, who led the National Assembly.

This disagreement caused many problems for the nation. It also caused a deep economic crisis for the people living there. Since 2015, seven million people have left Venezuela to find better lives.

The trouble began around the 2018 presidential elections. Many people believed these elections were not fair. The National Assembly, which is a group of lawmakers, called Maduro a usurper. This means they believed he took power unfairly.

They used rules from the 1999 Constitution to support Guaidó. Specifically, they used Article 233 to name him the acting president. A week after Maduro took his oath, the Supreme Tribunal of Justice disagreed. They said the National Assembly was acting without authority. This created a situation where two different groups claimed to be in charge.

Different parts of the world chose different sides during this time.

At his highest point, about 60 countries recognized Guaidó as the legitimate leader. Most Western and Latin American nations supported him. However, other strong lands like Russia, China, Cuba, Iran, Syria, and Turkey supported Maduro. Maduro was recognized by about 20 countries. The Organization of American States even recognized Guaidó's presidency in June 2019. This split showed how divided the global community was about Venezuela.

Leaders tried to find a way to solve the problem through talking.

In 2019, representatives from both sides began mediation. They held meetings in places like Norway and Barbados. However, these talks did not lead to a final deal. In 2020, the United States proposed a new plan. This plan suggested a transitional government that would not include Maduro or Guaidó. The U.S. said they would lift sanctions if Maduro organized new elections. Venezuela's foreign minister, Jorge Arreaza, rejected this proposal.

By the end of the crisis, the situation began to change again.

In 2021, the European Union stopped recognizing Guaidó as president. In December 2022, three main opposition parties changed their strategy. They decided to dissolve the interim government led by Guaidó. They wanted to create a new commission to manage foreign assets. This was done to prepare for the 2024 presidential election. The leaders felt the previous plan had not reached its goals. This shows how political situations can shift over many years.
