A vector is a way to show a path.

It tells us how long a path is. It also tells us which way it goes. In math, we use special signs to write these paths. This is called vector notation. People use different ways to write them. One way is called Cartesian coordinates. This uses a list of numbers to show the path.

Another way uses a distance and an angle. We call this polar coordinates. You can also use three numbers for a 3D path. One way uses a distance, an angle, and a height. This is called cylindrical coordinates.

A third way uses a distance and two different angles. This is called spherical coordinates.

Writing vectors has a long history. A man named W. R. Hamilton coined the term "vector" around 1843. Other math experts worked for many years to make these signs clear. They wanted everyone to use the same rules. It was not always easy to agree on one way.
