The geography of Vaud is remarkably diverse. It contains all three natural regions found in Switzerland. In the west, the Jura Mountains create a rugged landscape. The central portion is the Swiss Plateau, which features hilly terrain and moraines. To the south, the Swiss Alps rise sharply.

The highest peak in the canton is the Diablerets massif. It reaches an elevation of 3,222 meters. The canton also contains two of the nation's largest lakes. These are Lake Geneva and Lake Neuchâtel.

Human history in Vaud stretches back to prehistoric times. Early people lived alongside the large lakes. Later, the Celtic Helvetii tribe inhabited the region. In 58 BC, Caesar's troops defeated the Helvetii. This led to a period of Roman settlement. The Romans established many towns, including Vevey and Lausanne.

Aventicum was likely founded during or after the reign of Augustus. Roman remains are still visible in these areas today. Following the Romans, various groups such as the Alemanni and Burgundians occupied the territory. The Merovingian Franks and the Carolingian Empire also controlled the land at different times.

Political control shifted frequently during the Middle Ages. The Zähringens defeated the Burgundians in 1032. They were later succeeded by the counts of Savoy in 1218. Under Savoy, the area became the Barony of Vaud. However, the House of Savoy eventually declined in power. In the 15th century, troops from Bern began to occupy the land. By 1536, Bern had completely annexed the territory. This period also saw the arrival of the Protestant Reformation. This movement was supported by the Bernese authorities.

The path to independence was marked by significant unrest. The Vaudois people were often unhappy under Bernese rule. In 1723, Major Abraham Davel led a revolt regarding political rights. Later, inspired by the French Revolution, the Vaudois drove out the Bernese governor in 1798. They declared the Lemanic Republic.
