This specific eruption sent a plume of ash and gas up to 20 kilometers into the sky.
The glacier also has a rich history in terms of human interaction and naming. Eighteenth-century sources mention an older name for the glacier: Klofajökull. This name translates to "Cleft Glacier," likely due to deep cuts visible in the ice. On 7 June 2008, the area officially became part of Vatnajökull National Park. The park includes important landmarks like Hvannadalshnjúkur. This is the highest peak in Iceland and sits on the southern periphery of the glacier. 
Vatnajökull has become a famous location for global media and culture. The glacier served as the setting for the opening sequence of the 1985 James Bond film, "A View to a Kill." The Jökulsárlón terminal lake is also a popular filming site. This lake is formed by the Breiðamerkurjökull outlet glacier. 
Recent environmental changes have been observed in the temperatures surrounding the ice. In 2025, the average air temperature saw a low of -1.09 degrees Celsius in January. By December, the high reached 0.97 degrees Celsius. When compared to 1975, these average temperatures have shown an increase. In 1975, the July low was -1.50 degrees Celsius and the December high was 0.45 degrees Celsius. However, the effects of atmospheric warming have been somewhat mitigated. A patch of cold water in the North Atlantic Ocean, known as the "Blue Blob," helps slow the melting of glaciers in Iceland.
