The ice is incredibly deep and heavy. On average, the ice is 400 meters thick. In some places, it reaches a maximum thickness of 1,000 meters. About 30 smaller glaciers flow out from the main ice cap. These are called outlet glaciers. One example is the Fláajökull glacier.

There are many volcanoes hidden under the ice. When these volcanoes erupt, they create heat. This heat melts the ice and makes large pockets of water. This can cause a sudden flood called a jökulhlaup. One such flood happened in 1934 and released much water over several days. Another large flood came from the Grímsvötn volcanic lake in 1996.

Vatnajökull has a very interesting history. An older name for the glacier was Klofajökull. This means Cleft Glacier because of cuts in the ice. In June 2008, it became part of a national park. The park is called Vatnajökull National Park. The highest peak in Iceland, Hvannadalshnjúkur, is also part of this area.

Many famous stories use this beautiful place as a setting. The James Bond film A View to a Kill was filmed here. The show Game of Thrones also used the glacier for filming. People can visit the Jökulsárlón lake to see floating icebergs.

It is the largest and most voluminous ice cap in the country. This frozen feature covers approximately 8% of Iceland's total land area. Within Europe, it holds the title of the second largest ice cap by area. The only ice cap larger than Vatnajökull is the Severny Island ice cap. This larger ice cap is located in the extreme northeast of Europe in Russia.

Because of its immense scale, it is a vital part of the Icelandic landscape.

The physical structure of the glacier is defined by its incredible depth. The average thickness of the ice is about 400 meters. In certain locations, the ice reaches a maximum thickness of 1,000 meters. The glacier does not sit as a single, still block of ice. Instead, it features around 30 outlet glaciers that flow away from the main cap. In Icelandic, the word for glacier is "jökull," so these are called outlet jökulls.

One example of these moving parts is the Fláajökull outlet glacier. These flows help distribute the massive volume of ice across the surrounding terrain.

Beneath the heavy layers of ice, a powerful geological process is constantly at work. Several volcanoes exist directly under the Vatnajökull ice cap. When these volcanoes erupt, the heat melts the surrounding ice. This melting process creates large pockets of water trapped under the glacier. If the ice becomes too weak to hold this water, it can burst. This event results in a jökulhlaup, which is a glacial lake outburst flood.

These floods can be sudden and carry immense amounts of water.

History shows that these subglacial eruptions and floods are recurring events. During the last ice age, many such eruptions occurred under the ice. In more modern times, these volcanic activities continue to cause documented floods. For example, a jökulhlaup in 1934 released a massive amount of water over several days. Another significant event occurred in 1996, when the volcanic lake Grímsvötn caused a large flood. In May 2011, a volcanic eruption began in Grímsvötn within the national park. This specific eruption sent a plume of ash and gas up to 20 kilometers into the sky.

The glacier also has a rich history in terms of human interaction and naming. Eighteenth-century sources mention an older name for the glacier: Klofajökull. This name translates to "Cleft Glacier," likely due to deep cuts visible in the ice. On 7 June 2008, the area officially became part of Vatnajökull National Park. The park includes important landmarks like Hvannadalshnjúkur. This is the highest peak in Iceland and sits on the southern periphery of the glacier.

Vatnajökull has become a famous location for global media and culture. The glacier served as the setting for the opening sequence of the 1985 James Bond film, "A View to a Kill." The Jökulsárlón terminal lake is also a popular filming site. This lake is formed by the Breiðamerkurjökull outlet glacier.

Visitors can see icebergs floating in the water that have broken off from the glacier. Other major productions, such as the HBO series "Game of Thrones," have used the glacier as a location. The movie "Interstellar" also used the glacier as a scenic background in 2013.

Recent environmental changes have been observed in the temperatures surrounding the ice. In 2025, the average air temperature saw a low of -1.09 degrees Celsius in January. By December, the high reached 0.97 degrees Celsius. When compared to 1975, these average temperatures have shown an increase. In 1975, the July low was -1.50 degrees Celsius and the December high was 0.45 degrees Celsius. However, the effects of atmospheric warming have been somewhat mitigated. A patch of cold water in the North Atlantic Ocean, known as the "Blue Blob," helps slow the melting of glaciers in Iceland.
