The name comes from a fictitious place in a book. That book is titled Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan. Later, a famous novel by William Makepeace Thackeray also used the name.

The magazine has a long and changing history. Condé Montrose Nast started it in 1913. He first bought a men's magazine called Dress. He renamed it Dress and Vanity Fair before it became just Vanity Fair. The magazine was very popular during the 1920s. It reached a peak of 90,000 copies in circulation. However, the Great Depression caused advertising money to drop. Because of this, the magazine merged into Vogue in 1936. It stayed part of Vogue until February 1983. Then, Condé Nast decided to revive the title for a new era.

Many different editors have led the magazine over the years. Richard Locke was the editor for the first new issue in 1983. He was soon replaced by Leo Lerman. Other famous editors include Tina Brown and Graydon Carter. Graydon Carter led the magazine from 1992 until 2017. Radhika Jones served as editor from 2017 to 2025. Finally, Mark Guiducci became the editor-in-chief in June 2025. These leaders helped decide what stories and photos to share with the world.

Vanity Fair is known for its big news stories and famous photos.

These stories and images make the magazine very well known.

The magazine is more than just paper and ink today. It has many international editions for readers around the world. There are versions in the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, and France. It also hosts the famous Vanity Fair Oscar Party. This event started in 1994 and is a very fancy party. The magazine even has a YouTube channel for videos.
