The island features diverse climates and geographic settings. The southern portion and the nearby Gulf Islands sit south of the 49th parallel. This makes them unique, as they are the only parts of Western Canada located so far south. The southeast region enjoys one of the warmest climates in Canada. Since the mid-1990s, certain areas have been mild enough to support Mediterranean crops. Farmers in these spots can grow items like lemons and olives.

The Kwakwakaʼwakw people live on the northern and northwestern parts of the island. They are also known as the Kwakiutl, but they prefer their autonym. They speak Kwakʼwala, a Northern Wakashan language. The Nuu-chah-nulth people inhabit most of the west coast. They speak a Southern Wakashan language. The Coast Salish are the largest southern group. Their territory covers the southeastern island and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. They include many distinct nations, such as the Cowichan and the Saanich.

European exploration began in the late 18th century due to interests in the fur trade. Spain sent expeditions starting in 1774 to assert claims in the Pacific Northwest. In 1778, Captain James Cook visited Nootka Sound and claimed the area for Great Britain. This led to a period of intense rivalry between Spain and Britain. The two nations competed for control over the trade of otter pelts. This tension eventually became known as the Nootka Crisis.

In 1792, a diplomatic meeting took place to resolve these disputes. British Captain George Vancouver met with the Spanish commander Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra. They held friendly negotiations at Nootka Sound. To commemorate their meeting, it was proposed that the land be named "Quadra and Vancouver Island."

While the Spanish eventually dismantled their fort at Nootka, the name evolved over time. As Spanish interests in the region declined, the name was shortened. By 1824, the Hudson's Bay Company used "Vancouver's Island" in their correspondence. The name received full official status in 1849 with the founding of the Colony of Vancouver Island.
