People have lived on this island for thousands of years. Archaeological finds show people were there as early as 4500 BC. Later, the Lapita people moved to the islands around 1200 BC. In 1568, a Spanish explorer named Álvaro de Mendaña saw the island. He named it after a town in Spain called Guadalcanal. For a long time, the name was spelled in different ways. In the 1800s, missionaries and whalers began to arrive. Later, many local people were sent to work on plantations in Australia and Fiji.
During World War II, Guadalcanal became a very important place. In 1942, Japanese forces arrived and built an airfield at Lunga Point. This airfield was a threat to Australia, so Allied troops landed to take it back. They named the airfield Henderson Field. The fighting around this field lasted for six months. It was a very hard campaign with many battles on land and at sea. Many ships were sunk in the nearby waters.
After the war ended, the island changed again. The capital of the Solomon Islands moved to Honiara. The old Henderson Field became the country's international airport. You can still see history at the Vilu War Museum.

Many unique living things call the island home. In the forests, you might find colorful parrots and bats. There is also a small animal called a grey cuscus. It is a type of marsupial, which means it has a pouch. Near the shores, you can find estuarine crocodiles.

The geography of the island is defined by high peaks and long rivers. Mount Popomanaseu is the highest point on the island. It is also the highest peak in the entire Solomon Islands, reaching an elevation of 2,335 meters above sea level. The island features many other significant peaks, such as Mount Makarakomburu and Mount Tanareirei. Water flows through various river systems across the terrain. The Mbokokimbo River is the longest river on the island, stretching 140 kilometers. Other notable rivers include the Lungga, Mbalisuna, and Matanikau rivers.
Human history on Guadalcanal stretches back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence from Poha Cave and Vatuluma Posovi shows habitation as early as 4500–2500 BC. Between 1200 and 800 BC, the Austronesian Lapita peoples migrated to the islands. In 1568, the Spanish explorer Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira led the first European expedition to see the island. He named it after the village of Guadalcanal in Andalusia, Spain. This name honored Pedro de Ortega Valencia, a member of the expedition. Over time, European settlers, whalers, and missionaries arrived. In the 1860s, British authorities sent about 60,000 Solomon Islanders to work on plantations in Australia or Fiji. By 1893, the British Solomon Islands Protectorate was proclaimed, which included Guadalcanal.
During World War II, the island became a central site of intense conflict. In May 1942, Japanese forces occupied the island. They began constructing an airfield at Lunga Point on the north coast. This airfield posed a threat to Australia and communication lines to the United States. In August 1942, the United States conducted its first amphibious landing of the war to secure the area. Allied forces named the airfield Henderson Field. The campaign lasted six months and involved heavy ground, air, and naval combat.
The naval battles surrounding the island were exceptionally violent. Japanese forces used fast destroyers, known as the Tokyo Express, to resupply their troops at night. During the day, the Cactus Air Force defended the airfield. Many ships were lost in the waters near the Solomon Islands. This area of the ocean became known as Ironbottom Sound. In November 1942, a major naval battle occurred where Allied forces sank the Japanese battleship Kirishima. This was one of only two times in the Pacific theater that two battleships fought each other.
Following the war, the island underwent significant political changes. Honiara, located on the north coast, became the capital of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate. It later became the capital of the independent nation of Solomon Islands.

The island also hosts a unique variety of wildlife. The most notable mammal is the grey cuscus, also called the phalanger. This animal is a native marsupial. Other mammals include various species of bats and rodents. The forests are home to many colorful parrots. Estuarine crocodiles inhabit the shores, particularly along the Weather Coast in the south.
