His mother was a piano teacher. She started his lessons when he was only three years old. He learned to make the piano sound like a singing voice. This gave his music a rich and round tone.

In 1958, Cliburn won a huge contest in Moscow, Russia.

This was the first Tchaikovsky Competition. After he played, the crowd clapped for eight minutes! He even played a Russian song to show respect. This win made him a star all over the world.

His music was very popular. His recording of a Tchaikovsky piece became a best seller. It was the first classical album to reach platinum status. This means it sold a very large number of copies.

Cliburn played for many important people. He played for kings, queens, and world leaders. He also played for every U.S. president from Harry Truman to Barack Obama. He loved music deeply. He often practiced late at night while the rest of the world was asleep.
