The city's design is quite special compared to other old towns. Most medieval cities have narrow, winding streets and small alleys. However, the designer Francesco Laparelli used a rectangular grid plan. This means the streets are wide and straight.

The streets start at the City Gate and lead toward Fort Saint Elmo. This fort overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. The city also has strong walls called fortifications. These include large structures known as bastions, curtains, and cavaliers.

Valletta has a very long and interesting history. It was built by a group called the Knights Hospitaller. They wanted to protect the island of Malta. The city was named after Jean Parisot de Valette. He was a leader who helped defend the island during the Great Siege of 1565.

The first stone for the city was laid on March 28, 1566. This stone was placed at the Our Lady of Victories Church. Later, a man named Girolamo Cassar helped finish the building work. The city officially became the capital in 1571.

There are many amazing things to see in such a small area. The city covers only 0.55 square kilometres. Despite its size, it contains 320 different monuments.

As the southernmost capital in Europe, it holds a unique position. Because of its small size, it is the smallest capital city in the European Union. In 2021, the population of this compact city was 5,157 people.

The city's layout was a major departure from traditional medieval urban design. Most medieval Maltese towns featured irregular, winding streets and narrow alleys. Instead, the principal designer, Francesco Laparelli, used a rectangular grid plan.

The city is also heavily fortified to protect its inhabitants. These defenses consist of bastions, curtains, and cavaliers.

The history of Valletta is tied to the Order of Saint John, also known as the Knights Hospitaller. Before the city existed, the peninsula was known by names like Xagħret Mewwija or Sciberras. In 1565, the Ottomans launched the Great Siege of Malta.

Although Fort Saint Elmo fell during the conflict, the Order eventually won with Sicilian help. To secure their position, Grand Master Jean de Valette ordered a new fortified city. He laid the foundation stone on March 28, 1566, at the site of the Our Lady of Victories Church. The city was named La Valletta in his honour.

Building the city required significant international cooperation and expertise. Pope Pius V provided the military architect Francesco Laparelli to design the grid. Philip II of Spain provided substantial monetary aid to fund the project. After Laparelli died in 1570, his assistant Girolamo Cassar oversaw much of the construction. The city became the official capital on March 18, 1571. This happened when Grand Master Pierre de Monte moved his seat to the Grandmaster's Palace. By the 1580s, several Auberges, which were residences for the Order's various groups, were completed.

Valletta's architecture is famously characterized by the Baroque style. This style is seen in many of its grand palaces, churches, and gardens. Other influences include Mannerist, Neo-Classical, and Modern architecture. During the reign of Grandmaster Pinto, many buildings like the Auberge de Castille were remodeled in the Baroque style.

The city has also faced significant hardship. During the Second World War, German and Italian air raids caused major destruction. One notable loss was the 19th-century Royal Opera House. Despite these scars, the city remains a center for culture and government.

The density of history in Valletta is truly remarkable. The entire city covers an area of just 0.55 square kilometres. Within this tiny space, there are 320 different monuments.

This high concentration of historic sites has earned it the nickname "open-air museum." In 1980, UNESCO officially recognised Valletta as a World Heritage Site. It was also chosen as the European Capital of Culture in 2018. In 2016, it was even listed as the sunniest city in Europe.

Today, Valletta continues to function as a vital political and social centre. It houses the Parliament of Malta, located in a modern building near the city entrance.

The Grandmaster's Palace remains important, housing the Office of the President. The Auberge de Castille serves as the Office of the Prime Minister. The city's climate is a Mediterranean one, featuring long, hot, dry summers.
