His path to leadership began with many years of training. Gerasimov was born in Kazan on September 8, 1955. He grew up in a working-class family. He liked stories about the army from a young age. He went to the Kazan Suvorov Military School and graduated in 1973. Later, he went to the Kazan Higher Tank Command School. He finished that school in 1977 with honors.

He also studied at the Malinovsky Military Armored Forces Academy and the Russian General Staff Academy.

Throughout his career, Gerasimov held many different commands. He started as a tank platoon commander in Poland. He later moved to the Far Eastern Military District in 1982. He served as a commander during the Second Chechen War. During that time, he was in charge of the 58th Combined Arms Army. He also led the Leningrad, Moscow, and Central Military Districts. In 2012, President Vladimir Putin chose him to replace Nikolai Makarov.

Many people study the ideas that Gerasimov uses. In 2013, he wrote an article about the value of science and foresight. Some people call this the "Gerasimov doctrine." It describes using many different tools to reach a goal. These tools include technology, information, and even culture. It is not just about using soldiers in a fight. This idea helps explain how modern conflicts can happen in many ways at once.

Recently, Gerasimov has been involved in many major events. He was part of the planning for events in Crimea in 2014. He also helped plan military actions in Syria starting in 2015. In January 2023, he became a commander in the war in Ukraine. He replaced Sergey Surovikin in this role. In 2024, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for him. They said he was involved in alleged war crimes during the invasion of Ukraine.

Valery Vasilyevich Gerasimov is a high-ranking Russian military leader.

Since November 9, 2012, he has served as the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. He also holds the title of First Deputy Minister of Defense. In this role, he helps direct the entire Russian military system. Because of his position, he is one of only three people with access to Russia's nuclear weapons. This access is shared only with President Vladimir Putin and the Minister of Defense. This makes him one of the most powerful figures in the Russian government.

Gerasimov's career began with deep academic and field training. He was born on September 8, 1955, in Kazan, a city in the Tatar ASSR. He attended the Kazan Suvorov Military School and graduated in 1973 with a gold medal. In 1977, he completed the Kazan Higher Tank Command School with honors.

He later attended two more advanced institutions. These were the Malinovsky Military Armored Forces Academy and the Russian General Staff Academy. These schools provided the advanced training needed for high-level command.

Before reaching the top of the military, Gerasimov held many different field commands. He started as a tank platoon commander in Poland during the 1980s. He later moved to the 5th Combined Arms Army in the Far Eastern Military District in 1982. He rose through the ranks to become a tank battalion chief of staff. In 1993, he commanded the 144th Guards Division. He also supervised the withdrawal of this division to Russia in August 1994. These experiences helped him build a reputation for strong leadership.

One major part of his rise involved the Second Chechen War. During this conflict, Gerasimov served as the chief of staff and later the commander of the 58th Combined Arms Army. He was responsible for the logistics and the operational planning of this army. During the war, his convoy was ambushed near the village of Bamut. He reportedly fought the attackers with a rifle until reinforcements arrived. In 2002, he personally led an operation against a group of fighters. This operation helped the military recapture the village of Galashki.

As he moved into senior leadership, Gerasimov managed large military regions. He commanded the Leningrad Military District and the Moscow Military District. In 2012, he became the commander of the Central Military District.

He also commanded the annual Victory Day Parade on Red Square four times between 2009 and 2012. These roles prepared him for his appointment as Chief of the General Staff. He replaced Nikolai Makarov after President Putin approved his nomination.

Many experts study a concept often called the "Gerasimov doctrine." This term comes from an article he wrote in 2013 titled "The Value of Science is Foresight."

The doctrine describes using many different tools to reach strategic goals. These tools include military force, technology, information, diplomacy, economics, and culture. Some researchers, like Mark Galeotti, suggest the term is actually a Western interpretation. They argue it describes a Russian perspective on Western foreign policy rather than a specific Russian plan.

Gerasimov has been a central figure in several major international conflicts. He was involved in the planning for the seizure of Crimea in 2014. He also helped manage the Russian military intervention in the Syrian civil war starting in 2015. In the Syrian conflict, the General Staff under Gerasimov handled the general planning for the Group of Forces. In January 2023, he was appointed commander of the Joint Group of Forces in the Russo-Ukrainian war.

This appointment came after he replaced Sergey Surovikin.

His career has also faced significant legal challenges. In 2024, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Gerasimov. The court made this decision based on charges of alleged war crimes. These charges are related to his role during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This development connects his military leadership to the international legal system.
