Widely known by his nickname "the Doctor," he is considered one of the greatest motorcycle racers in history. Rossi achieved a remarkable nine Grand Prix World Championships throughout his long career. He is also unique as the only road racer to compete in 400 or more Grands Prix. His career spanned a massive technological shift in the sport. He raced through the two-stroke era of the 1990s and the four-stroke MotoGP era of the 21st century.

Rossi's path to greatness began with a focus on safety and early skill building. Born in Urbino, Italy, on 16 February 1979, he was the son of motorcycle racer Graziano Rossi. Because his mother, Stefania, was concerned about his safety, Rossi began with kart racing in 1985 instead of motorcycles. He won a regional kart championship in 1990 before moving to motorcycles. In 1993, former champion Paolo Pileri gave him his first chance on a 125cc motorcycle. His first race meeting was difficult, as he crashed twice and finished ninth. However, he quickly improved, winning the 125cc World Championship in 1997 by winning 11 of 15 races.

After his success in the 125cc class, Rossi moved up to the 250cc class. He spent the 1998 season as a runner-up, finishing just 23 points behind champion Loris Capirossi. In 1999, Rossi dominated the championship as the sole rider of the official Aprilia Grand Prix Racing team. He clinched the title in Rio de Janeiro, earning his second career world title. By the year 2000, Rossi graduated to the highest class: the 500cc World Championship. He worked with retired five-time champion Mick Doohan as a mentor during this transition. In 2001, Rossi dominated the 500cc class, winning 11 races and taking his third title overall.

The early 2000s marked the beginning of the MotoGP era, which used four-stroke engines. Rossi won the first MotoGP championship in 2002 with the Repsol Honda team. He repeated this success in 2003, winning his fifth title overall. In 2004, he made a major move to the Yamaha team. This move was significant because he became the first rider to win consecutive races with different manufacturers. He won the MotoGP World Championship with Yamaha in 2004 and 2005. After some less successful years, he regained the title in 2008 and 2009.

Rossi's career was defined by incredible statistics and endurance. He holds the record for the most premier class victories with 89 wins. He also holds the record for the most premier class podiums with 199 finishes. His seven premier class titles all came during the dominant decade of the 2000s. During that decade, he achieved 77 race wins and 48 pole positions. Even in the later stages of his career, he remained competitive. In 2015, he led the standings for most of the season but finished only five points behind his teammate, Jorge Lorenzo.

As he aged, Rossi faced new challenges and changes in the racing world. After a 2010 season where he suffered a broken leg, he joined the Ducati factory team. His time with the Italian manufacturer included two seasons without a victory. He returned to Yamaha in 2013 and achieved three successive runner-up positions from 2014 to 2016. He won his final race victory at the 2017 Dutch TT at the age of 38. Rossi eventually moved to the Petronas SRT team for the 2021 season.
