Valentinian joined the army when he was a young man. He faced a hard time after a battle with the Alamanni. A commander named Barbatio blamed Valentinian for a loss in Gaul. Valentinian was born in 321 in Cibalae, which is now Vinkovci in Croatia. His father was Gratianus, a military officer famous for his wrestling skills. Valentinian joined the army in the late 330s. His early career faced a major setback in Gaul. During a conflict with the Alamanni, a commander named Barbatio blamed Valentinian for a defeat. As a result, Valentinian was cashiered, or removed, from his position in the army. He moved to a family estate in Sirmium to live after this failure.
His path to the throne began after the death of Emperor Jovian. Jovian had died under mysterious circumstances while traveling to the capital. A meeting of civil and military officials was held at Nicaea to select a successor. Several names were suggested, including Aequitius and Januarius. However, the assembly chose Valentinian because he was highly qualified and lived nearby. He accepted the position on February 25 or 26, 364. When the soldiers threatened to riot due to uncertainty, Valentinian showed great boldness. He reassured them that the army was his highest priority.
To ensure stability, Valentinian appointed his brother Valens as co-Augustus.
Much of Valentinian's reign was defined by military campaigns to protect Gaul. In 365, the Alamanni crossed the Rhine to invade Roman territory. Valentinian faced a difficult choice between helping his brother in the East and protecting Gaul. After listening to the leaders of Gallic cities, he chose to stay and fight. He sent generals to stop the invaders, but they were initially defeated. Later, a general named Jovinus won a victory near Chalôn. This success helped push the Alamanni out of the region.
Valentinian personally led massive military operations to secure the borders. In the spring of 368, he crossed the Rhine and Main rivers with a large army.
Valentinian I established a powerful family line known as the Valentinian dynasty.
