Vajiravudh's path to leadership began with a global education. He was born on 1 January 1881 to King Chulalongkorn. In 1893, after the Franco-Siamese crisis, his father sent him to Britain. This move was intended to help modernize the Siamese army and navy. Vajiravudh studied military science at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. By 1898, he was commissioned as a captain in the Durham Light Infantry. He later studied law and history at Christ Church, Oxford. During his time in Europe, he attended several important royal events. He attended the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902. He also attended the enthronement of King Alfonso XIII in Madrid.

Upon becoming king, Vajiravudh initiated several major institutional reforms. He established military academies and created the rank of "general." His first major project was the Royal Pages College. He wanted this school to train efficient, moral young men for the state. This school later became Vajiravudh College. He also elevated the Civil Servant School to Chulalongkorn Academy for Civil Officials. This institution eventually became Chulalongkorn University, the first university in Siam.

To improve public health, he helped establish Vajira Hospital in 1912 and Chulalongkorn Hospital in 1914. He also founded the Wild Tiger Corps, a paramilitary group. This group grew to 4,000 members within its first year. A branch for children was also created, which became the Boy Scouts.

His administration also reorganized how the country was governed. He changed the traditional monthon system into smaller regions called "paks." Each pak was managed by an Uparaja, or viceroy. These viceroys reported directly to the king. This change was meant to centralize power and reduce local corruption. However, this move caused tension with older aristocrats like Prince Damrong. In 1912, he also changed the national calendar. He moved Siam from the Rattanakosin Era to the Buddhist Era. This change meant the new year began on 1 April.

Not all changes were met with approval from his subjects. In 1912, a group of young army and naval officers attempted a coup. They wanted to replace the absolute monarchy with a democracy. The plotters were upset by the king's spending and his focus on theater. They also felt the Wild Tiger Corps threatened the regular military. The coup plan was leaked before it could be carried out. Prince Chakrabongse arrested the conspirators. While some faced severe sentences, Vajiravudh commuted the death sentences for many. He did this because of their youth and family backgrounds.

Vajiravudh worked to build modern infrastructure across the kingdom. He oversaw the start of construction for Don Mueang Airport in 1914. He also helped extend the railway system to the south. The Hua Lamphong station in Bangkok became a major center for these railroads. To support the economy, he founded the Rangsit Rice Experiment Station in 1916. This helped develop better rice varieties for farmers. He also created Dusit Thani, an experimental city. This city allowed him to test democratic ideas like elections and a parliament.

His reign connected Siam to the broader movements of the early 20th century. He navigated the complexities of Western influence and international diplomacy. He participated in the global stage by sending forces to World War I. His efforts to modernize the state helped prepare Siam for a changing world. Even his personal interests in arts and culture served to build a national identity. Through his schools, hospitals, and infrastructure, his influence remains visible today. His legacy is a blend of traditional Siamese roots and modern global systems.
