A vacuum cleaner is a mechanical device designed to remove dirt and debris from various surfaces.

It primarily uses suction to pull particles from carpets, hard floors, and other materials. Many models also utilize agitation to increase cleaning efficiency. This process involves using a rotating brush to loosen trapped particles. Once lifted, the debris is collected into a dust bag or a plastic bin. These machines are essential tools in both residential homes and commercial settings. They exist in many forms, including stick, handheld, upright, and canister models.

The core mechanism of a vacuum cleaner relies on moving air to create suction. Most modern machines use an internal fan or impeller to move air through the system. There are two main engineering approaches for handling the airflow: direct-fan and fan-bypass designs. In a direct-fan cleaner, a large impeller is mounted near the suction opening. The dirt passes directly through the fan before being blown into a bag. This method is very efficient for heavy carpet cleaning because it creates high airflow. However, it is less effective for cleaning above the floor with a long hose.

Fan-bypass cleaners use a different method to protect the machine's internal parts. In these models, the motor is mounted after the filter bag. The dust is removed from the airstream by the bag or a filter first. Only then does the cleaned air pass through the fan. These fans are usually smaller and use multiple turbines to boost power. While they require more electricity, they are excellent for both carpets and floors. This is because their suction power does not drop significantly when using a long hose. Many upright models also use a separate motor to power the brushroll. This allows the user to turn off the brush for hard floors.

The history of vacuum technology began with manual tools in the 19th century. In 1860, Daniel Hess of Iowa invented a manual carpet sweeper.

This device used bellows to create suction and a rotating brush to gather dust. In 1868, Ives W. McGaffey created the "Whirlwind" in Chicago. This was a bulky device that used a hand-cranked, belt-driven fan. Melville R. Bissell also developed similar models in 1876. These early machines were difficult to operate because they required manual labor to create suction.

As technology improved, powered cleaning systems began to emerge at the turn of the century. In 1898, John S. Thurman patented a "pneumatic carpet renovator." This system used an internal combustion engine and traveled on a horse-drawn wagon. It actually blew dust into a receptacle rather than using suction. By 1901, engineers like Hubert Cecil Booth and David T. Kenney developed suction-based powered cleaners. Booth's system, called "Puffing Billy," used a cloth filter to manage air. Kenney's design was a stationary system that used steam engines and long pipes.

The development of the portable electric vacuum changed domestic life forever. In 1907, James Spangler invented a portable electric model using a soap box and a pillowcase. He sold his patent in 1908 to William Henry Hoover. The Hoover Company later redesigned the machine with a steel casing and casters. Their first commercial model was the 1908 Model O, which cost $60.

Other innovators like James B. Kirby developed the "Domestic Cyclone" in 1906. This unique machine used water to separate dirt from the air. These advancements moved vacuum cleaners from large, stationary machines to portable household tools.

Today, vacuum cleaners come in many specialized configurations for different needs. Canister models are very popular in Europe because they offer great flexibility.

These have the motor and dust collector in a separate unit on wheels. A flexible hose connects this unit to a cleaning head. This design makes it easy to clean stairs or reach under furniture. For heavy-duty industrial work, people use drum or shop vacuums. These feature large, vertically positioned drums that can be stationary or mobile.

Recent decades have introduced even more advanced technologies to the market. In 1997, Electrolux demonstrated the first autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner.

These machines use miniaturized computers and improved batteries to clean without human help. Some researchers have even tested "Air Recycling Technology." This method uses an air stream to collect dust instead of traditional suction. While some modern designs like the AiRider attempt to hover on air, most cleaning remains focused on improving suction and filtration efficiency. From simple bellows to smart robots, the vacuum cleaner continues to evolve.
