This style uses strange or illogical situations to highlight social truths. His early plays included *The Garden Party* and *The Memorandum*. *The Memorandum* was performed at The Public Theater in New York. This helped establish his reputation in the United States. However, his success in theater was limited by his family background. He came from a wealthy, bourgeois family in Prague. This status caused him to face many restrictions under the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic.

Because of his social class, Havel faced many educational obstacles. In the early 1950s, he worked as a chemical laboratory assistant. He also attended evening classes at a gymnasium. He completed his secondary education in 1954. He later studied at the Faculty of Economics at the Czech Technical University. However, he dropped out after two years for political reasons. He was not allowed to enter humanities programs. Instead, he found work in the theater world. He worked as a stagehand at the Theatre ABC and the Theatre on Balustrade. These experiences shaped his early career and his view of society.

While these views caused debate at home, he remained very popular abroad. He worked to connect his nation to the broader European community.

After leaving the presidency, Havel continued his work as a public intellectual. He launched several new initiatives. These included the VIZE 97 Foundation and the Forum 2000 annual conference. He also helped create the Prague Declaration on European Conscience and Communism. His political philosophy focused on anti-consumerism and direct democracy.
