The history of the name "Uyghur" is complex and has changed over time. Before the 20th century, many people in the region lacked a single ethnic name. They often identified as "Muslims" or "Sarts," which means merchant or trader. Many identified by their specific oasis, such as "Kashgari" from Kashgar. From the 18th to the early 20th century, they were sometimes called Chanhui. This was a Chinese term meaning "turban-wearing Muslims."

The modern use of the term "Uyghur" was a 20th-century development. In 1921, a conference was held in the Soviet Union. This gathering included Turkic Muslims from the Tarim Basin. They decided to use "Uyghur" as their modern ethnic name. They knew this name was different from the medieval Uyghur Khaganate.

The Soviet Union formally accepted this usage. Later, the government in Xinjiang also accepted the term. This helped define the group as we know them today.

Uyghur people live in many parts of the world. This spread of people is known as a diaspora. While 80% of Xinjiang's Uyghurs live in the Tarim Basin, others live in cities like Ürümqi and Yining.

Large communities also exist in Turkic countries like Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. There is a community of about 10,000 people living in Turkey. Smaller groups live in Canada, the United States, Australia, and several other nations. This global presence shows how the Uyghur people are connected across borders.

Since 2014, the Uyghur people have faced serious challenges in Xinjiang. Various governments and organizations, such as Human Rights Watch, have accused the Chinese government of persecution. These accusations include forced labor and forced sterilization. Scholars estimate that at least one million Uyghurs have been held in internment camps since 2017. The Chinese government states these camps are for vocational training. They claim the camps help prevent terrorism and ensure adherence to Communist Party ideology. However, some scholars and organizations consider these actions to be crimes against humanity or genocide.

Understanding the Uyghurs requires looking at their deep historical roots. Their identity is tied to the specific geography of the Tarim Basin and the Silk Road.
