After returning to Germany, von der Leyen pursued a career in medicine. She attended the Hannover Medical School and earned her medical license in 1987. Von der Leyen's political career began in the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU). She became active in local politics in Lower Saxony in 1996. From 2003 to 2005, she served as a minister in the state government of Lower Saxony. She was responsible for social affairs, women, family, and health.
