They can learn about physics, which is the study of how nature works. They can also study architecture or even zoology. This university helps thousands of people gain new skills every year.

Learning at the university happens in many different ways. Students can choose from about 150 different programs. These programs are organized into 16 groups called faculties. About 4,000 students start their studies every year. Another 4,000 students finish their studies each year. This shows how busy and active the school stays.

The history of the school began a long time ago. In 1562, a grammar school was started by Peter Canisius. Salt mines in Hall in Tirol helped pay for it. On October 15, 1669, Leopold I turned it into a university. It had four faculties at that time. Later, in 1782, it became a smaller school called a lyceum. However, Emperor Franz I made it a university again in 1826. Because of these two leaders, the school has a very long official name.

The history of the university began with a Jesuit grammar school. This school was established in 1562 by Peter Canisius. It was financed by salt mines located in Hall in Tirol. On October 15, 1669, Emperor Leopold I re-chartered the school as a university. At that time, it consisted of four faculties. In 1782, the institution was reduced to a lyceum. A lyceum is a smaller type of educational institution. However, Emperor Franz I re-established it as a university in 1826. The university has faced many changes through different eras. During the National Socialist era, the school was renamed the Deutsche Alpenuniversität in March 1941. This change happened at the suggestion of Rector Raimund von Klebelsberg. During this time, opponents of the regime were excluded from academic life. After World War II ended in 1945, the school reopened under its original name. In the late 20th century, the university expanded its faculties significantly. The letters arrived in Innsbruck during the 18th century. They had previously been kept at the Allerengelberg charterhouse in Schnals. The university remains a center for research and significant academic contributions. Its physics department is noted for making many important discoveries.
