History shows how the university grew from a small proposal into a giant institution. In 1854, a document called Wood's despatch suggested creating universities in Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay. Frederic J. Mouat, a British education secretary, had also proposed a university in Calcutta. The University of Calcutta officially began on January 24, 1857. Maharaja Maheshwar Singh Bahadur of Darbhanga provided the land for the school. At its start, the university had a massive jurisdiction. Its reach extended from Kabul to Myanmar and Ceylon.

In the early years, the university functioned differently than it does now. It acted primarily as an affiliating and examining body. This means it managed tests but did not do all the teaching. Teaching happened at constituent colleges like Presidency College and Sanskrit College. Because space was limited, exams were held in tents in the Maidan park. The first university library began working in the 1870s. The first graduates, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and Joddu Nath Bose, finished in 1858. In 1882, Kadambini Ganguly and Chandramukhi Basu became the first Indian female graduates.

As the university grew, it built more permanent homes for its students. The Senate House opened on College Street in 1873. In 1912, the Darbhanga Building was erected thanks to a large donation. This building housed the University Law College and the library. Later, the Asutosh Building opened in 1926 to provide more teaching space. Following the partition of India, the university changed its structure. In 1951, the West Bengal government passed a new Act. This ensured the university had a more democratic structure.

Many brilliant minds have been connected to this university. Its alumni and faculty include heads of state and famous social reformers. The university is linked to six Nobel laureates. These include Ronald Ross, Rabindranath Tagore, and C. V. Raman. Other laureates are Amartya Sen and Abhijit Banerjee. The university also has many Fellows of the Royal Society. It even produced the only Indian winner of the Dirac Medal. This history of excellence makes it a vital part of global education.
