It brings together top teams from five different nations. These countries are Ireland, Italy, Scotland, Wales, and South Africa. The URC is one of the three biggest professional leagues in Europe. The best teams from this league move on to even larger contests. These are called the European Rugby Champions Cup and the Challenge Cup. Since the 2022–23 season, South African teams can also qualify for these European games.

Teams follow a specific way to earn points during the season. The regular season lasts for 18 matches for each team. A win earns a team 4 points. A draw earns 2 points. Teams can also earn bonus points in two ways. They get a bonus if they score four or more tries. They also get one if they lose by seven points or fewer. If a team does both, they get two bonus points.

After the regular season, the top eight teams enter a play-off tournament. This is a single-elimination bracket to find the champion.

This league has a long and changing history. It began in 1999 as the Welsh–Scottish League. Later, it became the Celtic League with teams from Ireland. In the 2006–07 season, it was known as the Magners League. The league grew when Italian teams joined in the 2010–11 season. It then became the Pro12 and later the Pro14. In 2021, the league expanded again. Four South African teams joined the competition at this time. This led to the current name, the United Rugby Championship.

In Scotland, teams play the 1872 Cup during the holidays. This is a special match between two Scottish clubs. In Ireland, some teams play in very large local grounds. These matches are called "derby matches" because they are between teams from the same nation.

The United Rugby Championship (URC) is a major professional rugby union competition. It brings together top-tier teams from Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales. The league represents the highest level of domestic club or franchise rugby in each participating nation. It is recognized as one of the three primary professional leagues in Europe. The other two are the English Premiership and the French Top 14. The most successful clubs from the URC advance to major continental competitions. These include the European Rugby Champions Cup and the Challenge Cup. Since the 2022–23 season, South African teams have also been eligible for these European tournaments.

The URC follows a structured seasonal format that runs from September to May. To manage fixtures, teams are divided into four regional pools. These are the Irish Shield pool, the Welsh Shield pool, the South African Shield pool, and a shared Scottish and Italian Shield pool. Teams play every other team in their own pool twice, once at home and once away. They also play every team from the other pools exactly once. This system ensures that Irish, Welsh, and South African teams each play six derby matches. For Scotland and Italy, their clubs only play their fellow countrymen twice. All teams are eventually ranked in a single, unified league table.

Teams earn points using a specific bonus points system during the 18-match regular season. A win provides 4 points, while a draw provides 2 points. Teams can earn additional bonus points through specific performance metrics. One bonus point is awarded if a team scores four or more tries in a single game. Another bonus point is given if a team loses by seven points or fewer. If a team achieves both goals, they earn two bonus points. After the regular season, the top eight teams enter a seeded, three-round single-elimination tournament. The highest-seeded teams hold home advantage for every tie, including the final.

The history of the league shows a long period of organizational growth. Its origins trace back to 1999 with the Welsh–Scottish League. This precursor eventually evolved into the Celtic League when Irish provincial clubs joined. The league has changed names many times due to various sponsors. It was known as the Magners League from 2006 to 2011. It later became the Pro12 when it expanded to include Italian teams in 2010. In 2017, it became the Pro14 after adding two South African teams. The current name, United Rugby Championship, was adopted in 2021 following further expansion.

Branding for the league varies depending on the geographic location of the fans. In South Africa, the competition is known as the Vodacom United Rugby Championship. In all other territories, it is called the BKT United Rugby Championship. This split branding mirrors the format used previously in Super Rugby. The winner of the championship receives a trophy named "The Array." This trophy was created in 2022 by silversmiths Thomas Lyte and the design agency Matter. It stands 68 cm tall and is nicknamed "the Beast." It is the heaviest trophy in all of club rugby.

Regional pride is celebrated through the URC Regional Shields. The top team in each regional pool at the end of the regular season wins a subsidiary trophy. These include the Irish, Welsh, and South African Shields, plus a joint Scottish-Italian trophy. These shields function as informal national championships for the professional sides. While Shield winners once guaranteed European qualification, that rule changed starting in the 2023–2024 season. Now, only the top eight teams in the overall league table qualify for Europe. This structure is similar to the Divisional Championships found in the NFL.

Cultural traditions and "derby matches" are central to the URC experience. A derby match is a game played between teams from the same nation. In Wales, the "Judgment Day" event features four clubs playing back-to-back derbies at the Principality Stadium. In Scotland, the 1872 Cup is a special match played between two Scottish clubs. These matches often take place during the Christmas and New Year periods. In Ireland, some matches are moved to much larger local GAA grounds to accommodate large crowds. These traditions help build intense rivalries and bring communities together through sport.
