Unbinilium

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Scientists are searching for a new chemical element called unbinilium. It is also known as element 120 or eka-radium. This element is hypothetical, which means it has not been made in a lab yet. It would sit in the eighth period of the periodic table. Scientists expect it to be an alkaline earth metal. This means it belongs to a specific group of metals.

Making unbinilium is a very difficult job for scientists. They try to create it by crashing tiny particles together. This is called a fusion reaction. They use a heavy target and shoot a fast beam of particles at it. One idea is to use a californium target with a titanium beam. This might create a new version of the element. However, these new elements might only last for a microsecond. A microsecond is a tiny fraction of a second.

Many teams have tried to find unbinilium over the years. In 2007, a team in Dubna, Russia, tried using iron and plutonium. They did not find any atoms. In the same year, a team in Germany tried using nickel and uranium. Their experiment also had no success. In 2011, scientists at the GSI in Germany tried a different reaction. They saw some signals, but they could not confirm if it was unbinilium.

New plans are starting to help scientists reach their goal. At the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the United States, work is underway. They plan to use a large machine called a cyclotron. In 2024, they successfully made two atoms of a different element called livermorium. This success helps them plan for element 120 in late 2025. Other teams in China are also planning their own experiments. They will use different metal beams to try and find it.

Unbinilium might be very special because of the island of stability. This is a concept from professor Glenn Seaborg. It suggests some superheavy elements might last longer than expected. This happens because of how the protons are arranged inside the nucleus. Unbinilium might also act differently than other metals in its group. It could show new ways of reacting that we have never seen before. This makes it a very exciting mystery for science.
