To understand UMNO, you must look at how it started. In 1946, the British created a plan called the Malayan Union. Many Malay people did not like this plan. They felt it threatened their power over the land. Leaders like Ahmad Boestamam spoke out against it. They met with the Sultan of Johor to reject the British plan. Later, on May 10, 1946, UMNO was officially formed in Johor Bahru. Onn Jaafar became the first leader of this new party.

After it was formed, UMNO worked to gain more influence. In 1951, Onn Jaafar left the party. Tunku Abdul Rahman then became the new President. The party began to work with other groups to win elections. They formed a team called the Alliance with the MCA and MIC. This team won many local elections in the 1950s. In 1955, the Alliance won 51 out of 52 seats in an election. This helped them move closer to making the country free.

Independence finally arrived on August 31, 1957. Tunku Abdul Rahman declared independence at Merdeka Stadium. The new constitution included special rules for the Malay people. These rules included quotas for school and jobs. It also made Malay the official language of the nation. In 1963, the country grew to become Malaysia. This included Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak.

UMNO has a very long history of leading the nation. For many years, every Prime Minister was also the President of UMNO. This included famous leaders like Mahathir Mohamad. The party held power until they lost an election in 2018. Even after that loss, the party stayed very important. They helped lead the government again during a crisis between 2020 and 2022. Today, leaders like Ahmad Zahid Hamidi still play a big role.

The United Malays National Organisation, commonly known as UMNO, is a conservative political party in Malaysia. It is a Malay nationalist group that focuses on protecting the interests of the Malay people. UMNO is often called Malaysia's "Grand Old Party" because it is the oldest national party in the country. The party's constitution outlines several core objectives. These include promoting Malay nationalism and the concept of Ketuanan Melayu, which refers to Malay supremacy. UMNO also works to preserve Malay dignity and culture. Additionally, the party seeks to recognize Islam as the religion of the federation and expand its presence within Malaysia.

UMNO was born from opposition to British colonial plans. After World War II, the British established the Malayan Union. Many Malay people opposed this because they believed it threatened their sovereignty. In the first phase of this movement, 41 Malay associations worked together. Led by Ahmad Boestamam, they presented a memorandum to Sultan Ismail ibni Sultan Ibrahim of Johor to reject the Union. This led to the second phase, a series of Malay congresses. On May 10, 1946, UMNO was officially formed at the Third Malay Congress in Johor Bahru. Onn Jaafar served as the party's first leader.

As the party grew, its leadership and focus changed. In 1951, Onn Jaafar left UMNO because he wanted to open membership to non-Malay citizens. Tunku Abdul Rahman then took over as President. To gain political strength, UMNO began forming alliances with other ethnic groups. In 1952, the Kuala Lumpur branch of UMNO partnered with the Selangor branch of the Malayan Chinese Association (MCA). This temporary pact helped them win local elections. By 1954, this partnership became a formal coalition known as the Alliance. The Alliance eventually grew to include the Malayan Indian Congress (MIC).

The Alliance became a powerful force in the lead-up to independence. In 1954, the Alliance won 226 out of 268 seats in state elections. In 1955, they contested a Federal Legislative Council election. The Alliance ran on a manifesto to achieve independence by 1959. They also promised to protect the rights of Malay rulers and reform the civil service. The results were a massive success for the coalition. The Alliance won 51 of the 52 contested seats. This victory allowed Tunku Abdul Rahman to become the first Chief Minister of Malaya.

Achieving independence required complex negotiations and legal work. In 1956, Tunku led negotiators to London to broker a deal with the British. They agreed on an independence date of August 31, 1957. A group called the Reid Commission was formed to draft the new constitution. The resulting document included provisions to protect special rights for Malays. These included quotas for higher education and civil service jobs. It also established Islam as the official religion and Malay as the national language. These protections were known as Articles 3, 152, and 153 of the Constitution.

In 1963, the nation expanded to become Malaysia. This new federation included Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak. The goal was to balance ethnic populations and combat communist activities. While Brunei chose not to join, the formation of Malaysia faced protests from Indonesia and the Philippines. Despite a period of "confrontation" with Indonesia, the merger was finalized. In the 1959 general elections, the Alliance had previously won 74 out of 104 seats. This gave them a two-thirds majority, allowing them to amend the constitution easily.

UMNO has held immense power throughout Malaysian history. For many decades, every Prime Minister of Malaysia also served as the President of UMNO. The party was a principal member of the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition. This coalition governed Malaysia from independence in 1957 until 2018. Even after losing the 2018 election, UMNO remained influential. The party returned to government during the political crisis of 2020–2022. During this time, UMNO Vice President Ismail Sabri Yaakob served as Prime Minister from 2021 to 2022. Currently, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi serves as Deputy Prime Minister.
