history Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Long ago, the land of Ukraine was split up. It was part of three big empires. These were the Austrian, Hungarian, and Russian empires. People in these lands wanted to keep their own culture. This was called the Ukrainian National Revival.

In the Russian Empire, people met in secret. One group was the Brotherhood of Sts Cyril and Methodius. It had 12 members. They met in the city of Kyiv. Later, groups called hromada appeared. A hromada is a community. The Kyiv hromada was very important. They helped start many new groups. They also helped with books and news.

In the Austrian Empire, things were different. In a place called Galicia, leaders let people use their own language. They started schools for children. They also let people use their own church. A group called the Ruthenian Triad published folk songs in 1837. In 1848, a new group formed in Lviv. It was the first legal political group. They even started a newspaper in the Ukrainian language. This helped the people feel proud of their home.
