Long ago, people did this by hand. Workers were called compositors. They used small metal blocks called sorts. Each sort had just one letter or symbol on it. These letters were cast backwards. This helped them print correctly on paper.

Compositors picked up sorts from a tray called a case. They put them into a tool called a composing stick. The letters looked upside down to the worker. They had to read the text backwards to check it. If they wanted bigger letters, they had to swap the sorts for new ones. After printing, they had to clean and put the sorts back. This step is called sorting.

In the old days, workers called compositors set type by hand.

They used a tray called a case to hold small metal blocks. These blocks were called sorts, and each one had a single letter. The letters were cast backwards so they would print correctly on paper. The compositor picked up sorts with their right hand. They placed them into a composing stick held in their left hand. Because the letters were backwards, a lowercase 'q' looked like a 'd'. This is likely where the phrase "mind your p's and q's" comes from.

As technology grew, new machines were built to speed up the work. In the 19th century, inventors created "hot metal" typesetting. This meant machines actually cast the metal type as they worked. The Linotype machine was invented in 1884 to help with this. It used a keyboard to assemble lines of type at once. Another system called Monotype used a keyboard to punch paper tape. This tape then controlled a machine that cast the metal. By the early 1900s, these machines were used by almost every large newspaper.

In the 1960s, a new way called phototypesetting appeared.

This was often called "cold type." Instead of hot metal, these machines used light. They spun disks with letters in front of a light source. This light hit special paper to create the text. Later, machines used screens called cathode-ray tubes to show characters. By the 1980s, digital systems became the standard. These systems used a process called imagesetting to make high-quality digital pictures of pages.

In 1985, tools like the Apple Macintosh made this possible for more people. You can now control how text looks using software. This is much easier than using heavy metal blocks. However, some people still do hand typesetting as a special craft. It is a way to keep a very old tradition alive. Even with all our new computers, the goal is the same. We still want to make text clear and beautiful for everyone to read.

During the letterpress era, workers called compositors performed manual typesetting. They worked with a tray called a case that held metal sorts. Each sort was a small metal block with a single character. These characters were cast backwards so they would print correctly.

A compositor would pick up sorts with their right hand. They then set them into a composing stick held in their left hand. Because the type was backwards, a lowercase 'q' looked like a 'd'. This difficulty is believed to be the origin of the phrase "mind your p's and q's." After printing, workers had to perform a process called sorting or dissing. This involved cleaning the sorts with a solvent and returning them to the correct compartments in the case.

Each metal sort had specific physical parts. These included the face, which is the part that touches the paper. There was also a body or shank, and a foot. The size of the type was determined by its point size.

The width of each sort is known as the set width. Both point size and set width are measured in points. If a compositor wanted to change the font size, they had to physically swap the sorts for a different size. This was a slow and careful mechanical process.

To save time and money, printers used a method called stereotyping. This was used when they expected to print many copies of a text. Instead of using the expensive metal type every time, they made a copy of the form. The entire form was pressed into a material like plaster of Paris or papier mâché. This created a shape called a flong. From this flong, a positive form was cast using type metal. This allowed the original metal type to be reused for other work quickly.

In the 19th century, mechanical typesetting emerged to reduce manual labor. These were often called "hot metal" systems because they cast type using molten metal. The Linotype machine, invented in 1884, was a major breakthrough. It used a keyboard to assemble matrices and cast an entire line of type at once. Another system, Monotype, used a keyboard to punch paper tape. This tape then controlled a casting machine. By the early 20th century, these machines were standard in large publishing houses.

In the 1960s, "cold type" or phototypesetting appeared.

These machines used light instead of molten metal. One method used glass or film disks that spun in front of a light source. This light exposed characters onto light-sensitive paper.

Later, machines used cathode-ray tubes to display characters. In the 1980s, this evolved into imagesetting. This process used a raster image processor to turn an entire page into a single high-resolution digital image.

The digital era brought typesetting to personal computers through desktop publishing.

In 1985, the concept of WYSIWYG, or "What You See Is What You Get," became available. This allowed users to see exactly how text would look on the page. Tools like the Apple Macintosh and software like Aldus PageMaker made this possible. While word processors like Microsoft Word became popular for offices, they lacked the advanced rules needed for complex book layouts. Today, many professionals use specialized software like Adobe InDesign to manage highly detailed typographic designs.
