Tuscany is an administrative region located in central Italy.

It covers a large area and is home to about 3,660,834 people as of 2025. The region is famous for its deep history and artistic legacy. Many people consider it the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. It is also the place where the foundations of the Italian language were laid. Because of its strong cultural identity, some describe Tuscany as "a nation within a nation."

The geography of Tuscany is defined by its varied terrain. The region is roughly triangular in shape. It shares borders with several other Italian regions. Liguria sits to the northwest and Emilia-Romagna is to the north. Marche and Umbria border the east side. Lazio lies to the south and southeast. To the west, the region meets the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas. The Tuscan Archipelago sits in these waters, with Elba being the most significant island.

Tuscany's landscape is dominated by hilly country. In fact, hills cover 66.5% of the total area. Mountains make up another 25% of the land. The highest of these peaks are part of the Apennines. Only 8.4% of the region consists of flat plains. Most of these plains are located around the valley of the Arno River. This river is vital to the region. Many important cities, including the capital Florence, Pisa, and Empoli, sit along its banks.

The climate in Tuscany varies by location. Coastal areas experience fairly mild weather. However, the interior can be much harsher and more rainy. The interior also sees large temperature changes between summer and winter. This creates a soil-building freeze-thaw cycle. This process helped the region serve as a key breadbasket for ancient Rome.

Human history in Tuscany began long before the Roman era. The Apennine culture lived here during the second millennium BC. Later, the Proto-Villanovan and Villanovan cultures inhabited the area. The Villanovan culture is seen as the oldest phase of Etruscan civilization.

The Etruscans then created the first major civilization in the region. They built transport infrastructure and practiced mining and agriculture. They also produced vibrant art, such as the Chimera of Arezzo.

The Romans eventually absorbed the Etruscans by the first century BCE. Rome established cities like Lucca, Siena, and Florence. They introduced new technologies like aqueducts and sewers.

The medieval period brought both wealth and conflict. Pilgrims traveling the Via Francigena helped grow local communities. However, the region was also split by the Guelphs and Ghibellines. These were factions supporting either the Papacy or the Holy Roman Empire.

This era saw the rise of powerful communes like Pisa and Siena. By the 15th century, Florence became the cultural capital. The Medici family rose to power during this time. Their influence helped drive the Florentine Renaissance.

This period also saw the tragic Black Death in 1348. The epidemic killed up to 70% of the Tuscan population.

Today, Tuscany is a major global destination for travelers. It is the second-most-popular Italian region for tourists. Many people visit to see the historic centers of Florence, Pisa, and Siena.

Eight Tuscan localities are designated as World Heritage Sites. These include the center of Florence and the Val d'Orcia. The region is also famous for its wines, such as Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino.

With over 120 protected nature reserves, the region remains a place of immense natural and cultural beauty.
