In North America and the United Kingdom, it is a central part of major cultural celebrations. People often serve it during Thanksgiving in the United States and Canada. It is also a staple for Christmas dinners in many parts of the world. This meat carries deep meaning for many families and communities.

Preparing turkey requires specific techniques to ensure it tastes good. Most cooks bake or roast the bird in an oven for several hours.

Because dark meat requires higher temperatures to denature myoglobin, the breast can become dry. To prevent this, cooks often use a brine. Brining involves soaking the meat in salty water before roasting. This process helps the breast stay moist while the darker meat cooks through. In the American South, some people use a turkey fryer to deep fry the bird in hot oil for 30 to 45 minutes.

Consumers can purchase turkey in many different forms. It is commonly sold whole with the head, feet, and feathers removed.

Some people prefer turkey crowns, which are the breast meat with the legs and wings removed. Sliced turkey is a popular choice for sandwiches or cold cuts. Ground turkey is often marketed as a healthy alternative to ground beef. Other processed varieties include turkey ham or turkey bacon, which are made by smoking the meat.

The history of turkey meat spans many centuries and continents. Indigenous peoples in Mexico, Central America, and the southern United States have eaten turkey since antiquity. In the 15th century, Spanish conquistadores transported Aztec turkeys to Europe. By the 16th century, turkey was already being eaten in England. Before the 20th century, pork ribs were actually the most common North American holiday food. This was because animals were usually slaughtered in November. In the past, wild turkeys were so abundant that they were eaten year-round.

Turkey meat provides significant nutritional value to those who eat it. Raw turkey breast is composed of 74% water and 25% protein. It contains only 1% fat and no carbohydrates.

A 100-gram serving of turkey breast provides 25 grams of protein. It is also a high source of niacin, vitamin B6, and phosphorus. These nutrients make up 20% or more of the Daily Value (DV). It also contains moderate amounts of zinc and pantotic acid. While it contains tryptophan, there is no scientific evidence that this causes post-meal drowsiness.

Different cultures have unique ways of serving turkey with various accompaniments. For a traditional American Thanksgiving, turkey is often served with stuffing or dressing.

Common side dishes include mashed potatoes, gravy, and cranberry sauce. Desserts like pumpkin or pecan pie often follow the meal. In the United Kingdom, Christmas turkey is typically served with Brussels sprouts, parsnips, and roast potatoes. In Mexico, turkey is used in regional dishes with mole sauce. Taiwan also features a specific dish known as turkey rice.

Turkey production is a global industry with specific regional focuses. In Finland, turkey farming has existed since the 1950s. Consumption in Finland peaks during the Christmas season. The Satakunta region is very important to this industry, producing over 98% of all Finnish turkey meat.

Even the eggs of the turkey are part of the biological profile of the bird. However, they are not commonly sold as food. This is because there is a high demand for the whole bird and a lower egg output compared to chickens or ducks. A single turkey egg can cost between $2 and $3.
