arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Tunnels is a famous comedy duo from Tokyo. The two men are Ishibashi and Kinashi. In school, Ishibashi played baseball. Kinashi played soccer. They did not start with manzai, which is a style of fast comedy. Instead, they did monomane, or making funny imitations of people. They became very popular on TV in the 1980s. Their show was called The Tunnels' Thanks to Everyone. Many people watched it. At times, 30% of all viewers in Japan watched them. This is a very big feat. They also made hit songs. The duo even made new words. They made short words for ex-boyfriends and ex-girlfriends. People in Japan still use these words today. Sometimes they used jokes that only their staff knew. This made the audience feel a bit confused. The staff would laugh loudly on the microphones. Later, they moved to shows about talking and interviews. They also worked with DJ Ozma. Together, they made a group called Yazima Beauty Salon. In this group, they dress in funny ways. Kinashi plays Margaret Camelia Yazima. Ishibashi plays Strawberry Camelia Yazima.
