Many people mapped this constellation long ago. Petrus Plancius helped name it in the late 1500s. He used notes from Dutch explorers. The stars in Tucana are not very bright. The brightest star is Alpha Tucanae. It marks the head of the bird. 
Tucana also holds many deep-sky objects. One is a bright cluster called 47 Tucanae. This cluster is very old. It is about 12 billion years old. Most of the Small Magellanic Cloud is also here.

You can think of Tucana as a cosmic neighborhood. It sits deep in the southern sky. If you live far north, you cannot see it at all. However, if you are far south, it stays above the horizon.

The history of Tucana begins with observations made in the late sixteenth century. Dutch explorers Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman observed the southern stars during their travels. Astronomer Petrus Plancius used their data to conceive the constellation. It first appeared on a celestial globe in 1598, published in Amsterdam by Plancius and Jodocus Hondius. In 1603, the German cartographer Johann Bayer included it in his star atlas, Uranometria. During this time, the constellation had many different names. De Houtman called it "the Indian magpie" because of a bird with a long beak. In China, it was known as "bird's beak," while in England, it was called "Brasilian Pye." 
Many stars within Tucana are complex systems rather than single points of light. Alpha Tucanae marks the head of the bird and is a spectroscopic binary. This means two stars orbit each other, but they cannot be seen separately with current telescopes. The orbital period for this system is about 11.5 years. Gamma Tucanae marks the beak and is a yellow-white sequence star. Other stars form large families, such as Beta Tucanae, which is a system of six member stars. Kappa Tucanae is a quadruple system containing four stars. 
Some stars in Tucana exhibit unique physical behaviors. Theta Tucanae is a white A-type star that is actually a close binary system. It is classified as a Delta Scuti variable star. These stars pulse, causing their brightness to change every 70 to 80 minutes. This star has also siphoned off mass from its companion. Zeta Tucanae is another interesting target for astronomers. It is a yellow-white star very similar to our Sun in mass and composition. It is about three billion years old and has a debris disk orbiting it. Scientists study such stars to look for the possibility of life-bearing planets. 
Beyond individual stars, Tucana contains massive deep-sky objects. The most famous is the globular cluster 47 Tucanae, also known as NGC 104. 

Another notable cluster in this region is NGC 362. This globular cluster is about 27,700 light-years away. Like 47 Tucanae, it is a Shapley class III cluster, meaning it has a defined nucleus. Interestingly, its orbit takes it very close to the center of the Milky Way. It was discovered by James Dunlop in the 1820s. Astronomers can see its stars using a telescope with 180x magnification. These clusters act as massive collections of stars that help us map the structure of our local galactic neighborhood. 
Tucana is a vital part of southern astronomy. Because it is a deep southern constellation, it remains below the horizon for anyone living north of the 30th parallel. However, it is circumpolar for those south of the 50th parallel. This means it stays above the horizon all night long in those regions. The constellation's boundaries were officially set by Belgian astronomer Eugène Delporte in 1930. By studying Tucana, astronomers learn about star formation, galaxy movement, and the life cycles of different types of stars.
