Truss bridge

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A truss bridge is a very clever way to build a path across water or valleys. It uses a special structure called a truss to hold up heavy loads. A truss is made of many straight parts connected together. These parts usually form many small triangles.

Triangles are important because they help the bridge keep its shape. Using this design is a smart way to save money. It allows engineers to use their building materials very efficiently. This makes the truss bridge a popular choice for many different jobs.

To understand how it works, we can look at the forces acting on the parts. When a heavy weight moves across the bridge, it creates two main types of force. One force is called tension, which is a pulling force. The other force is called compression, which is a pushing force.

In a truss, the straight parts work together to handle these forces. Some parts might be pushed while others are pulled. This teamwork allows the bridge to stay strong and steady even under heavy loads. A central vertical part can even stop a top member from buckling.

People have been designing these bridges for a long time. In the United States, early builders used wood and iron rods. They often built covered bridges to keep the wood safe from the weather.

In 1820, a man named Ithiel Town patented a simple design called the Town's lattice truss. This design was great because it did not need much metal or highly skilled workers. Later, in the 1870s, wrought iron became much more common for building these structures. Many famous companies, like the King Bridge Company, began selling their designs to different cities.

There are many different types of truss bridges used in the world. A deck truss carries the road on the very top of the structure. A through truss has the road running through the middle of the frame.

Some bridges even have two decks to separate cars from trains. There are also special designs like the Bailey truss, which was made for the military in 1940. These parts could be put together very quickly on land. Other designs, like the Pratt truss, were built because they were much stronger than older types.

Truss bridges connect to things you might already know about science. You can even see how they work by building a model with spaghetti! Spaghetti is very brittle, which means it breaks easily if you try to bend it.

However, a spaghetti truss can use many weak pieces to make one strong structure. This is just like how real engineers use many small parts to build huge bridges. It shows how math and physics can turn simple shapes into something very powerful.
