It was likely written around the year 1602. The story takes place during the Trojan War. This war began because a Trojan prince named Paris took Helen from her husband, King Menelaus.

In response, many Greek kings sailed to Troy to reclaim her. The play is known for having many different moods. It moves between funny, silly moments and very sad ones. Because of this, some people call it a "problem play." This means it is hard for readers to decide how to feel about the characters.

The play follows two main stories that happen at once. The first story is a romance between a Trojan prince named Troilus and a woman named Cressida.

They promise to be faithful to each other in a beautiful orchard. However, Cressida is forced to leave Troy to join the Greeks. Later, Troilus sees her with another man named Diomedes. This causes him great pain and makes him want to seek revenge. This romantic plot gives the play its name, even though it is not the longest part.

The second story focuses on the leaders of the Greek and Trojan armies.

The Greeks are led by Agamemnon, the King of the Greeks. The Trojans are led by King Priam. A major part of the plot involves the great warrior Achilles. The Greeks want Achilles to return to the battle to fight the Trojan hero, Hector. Achilles stays in his tent and refuses to help his army. He is very proud and does not want to fight. This creates a big crisis for the Greek leaders.

Many different people play important roles in these events.

In Troy, we meet characters like the prophetess Cassandra and Hector. Hector is a brave leader who argues that the war is costing too much. In the Greek camp, we meet the wise Ulysses and the warrior Ajax. Ulysses has a clever plan to make Achilles feel better about fighting. He suggests the Greeks use Ajax to fight Hector instead. This plan is meant to make Achilles jealous so he will rejoin the war.

The play connects to very old stories from Greek mythology. It follows the events described in the Iliad, which was written by Homer. The story moves from the refusal of Achilles to fight to the death of Hector. During the battle, Hector's death causes the Trojans to lose hope. The play ends with the conquest of Troy still unfinished. It shows how war and love can change people in many ways.
