Tritone

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A tritone is a very special musical interval. It is made of three whole tones. You can hear it when notes are spaced in a certain way. For example, the notes F and B make a tritone. This happens because you can count three whole steps between them. In some systems, it divides an octave exactly in half. This means it covers six semitones.

Music experts use two ways to define this sound. The narrow definition says a tritone is only an augmented fourth. An augmented fourth is a perfect fourth made one semitone wider. The broad definition is much larger. It includes augmented fourths and diminished fifths. A diminished fifth is a perfect fifth made one semitone narrower. It can even include very rare sounds like doubly augmented thirds.

History shows that people have had strong feelings about this sound. In the Middle Ages, many singers avoided it. It sounded very unstable and restless. Some people even called it "the devil in music." This name came from notes called "mi" and "fa" clashing together. While stories about people being punished for using it might be myths, the dislike was real. Many theorists wanted to avoid the F and B clash.

As time passed, composers learned to use the tritone for effect. They used it to create tension that needs to be released. In the Baroque and Classical periods, it became part of certain chords. For example, dominant seventh chords use a tritone. It helps the music move toward a resting point called the tonic. Later, Romantic composers used it to tell dark stories. Franz Liszt used it to suggest Hell in his Dante Sonata.

In the 20th century, the tritone became a neutral tool for many artists. Claude Debussy used it to show sudden, overwhelming power in his music. He used it in his cantata "La Damoiselle Elue." Benjamin Britten also used it in his "War Requiem." He used a tritone between C and F-sharp to create a sad feeling. Even in modern styles like twelve-tone music, the tritone is very important. It can help a composer move quickly between different keys.
