The surface looks very young because it has very few impact craters. This is because of cryovolcanism, which is a way that ice volcanoes can reshape the ground.

Triton moves through space in a very unusual way. Most large moons orbit in the same direction that their parent planet rotates. However, Triton has a retrograde orbit. This means it revolves in the opposite direction of Neptune's rotation. Triton is the only large moon in the Solar System to do this. Its orbit is also tilted at an inclination of 157 degrees. This tilt is what causes its retrograde motion. Triton's orbit is nearly circular now, but it used to be much more eccentric. Scientists believe gas drag from a debris disc helped circularize its path.

Scientists believe Triton was not born orbiting Neptune. Instead, it likely originated in the Kuiper belt. The Kuiper belt is a ring of icy objects located in the outer Solar System.

Triton is similar to Pluto in its chemical composition. Both bodies contain large amounts of nitrogen and trace amounts of methane. A 2024 study suggests they likely formed in the same region of the outer nebula. Triton was eventually ejected from that region and captured by Neptune's gravity. One theory suggests Triton was part of a binary system. When this pair encountered Neptune, they dissociated. One part was expelled, while Triton became bound to the planet.

Triton is a complex, differentiated world. This means its internal materials have separated into distinct layers. The moon has a solid rocky-metallic core at its center. Above this core is a probable subsurface ocean of liquid water. The outer crust consists primarily of ice.

The surface is covered in a transparent layer of annealed frozen nitrogen. The surface composition includes 55% nitrogen ice. It also contains 15–35% water ice and 10–20% frozen carbon dioxide. Small amounts of methane and carbon monoxide are also present.

The moon is one of the most geologically active worlds in the Solar System. Its surface appears very young, with an estimated average age of less than 100 million years. This is because it has very few impact craters. Triton features intricate cryovolcanic and tectonic terrains.

Cryovolcanism involves volcanoes that erupt icy materials instead of molten rock. These processes, along with tectonic shifts, constantly reshape the moon's surface. Even though the orbit is circular now, tidal heating may still occur. This heating happens through obliquity tides within the interior.

This discovery happened only 17 days after Neptune itself was found. Lassell used a self-built aperture metal mirror reflecting telescope. For a long time, people simply called it "the satellite of Neptune." It was not until the discovery of Nereid in 1949 that Triton was distinguished as a separate moon. The name Triton comes from the Greek sea god, the son of Poseidon.

We have only seen a small portion of Triton up close. The Voyager 2 spacecraft performed a flyby in 1989.

This mission remains the only close visit to the moon. However, the probe was only able to study about 40% of the surface. Because of this, scientists want to send more missions. Concepts like the Trident and Nautilus missions have been developed. These future studies would help us understand this massive, icy world much better.
