These islands sit in the South Atlantic Ocean. They are part of a British Overseas Territory. This territory is called Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.

Traveling to these islands is a major undertaking. There is no airstrip for planes on the main island.

Because of this, ships are the only way to travel to or from the islands. A journey from Cape Town, South Africa, takes about six days. Some cruises also depart from Ushuaia, Argentina. The main settlement is the village of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas.

Most of the 250 permanent inhabitants live there. They all hold British Overseas Territories citizenship. The village includes structures like St Mary's Church.

The history of the islands began with discovery. A Portuguese explorer named Tristão da Cunha first sighted the islands in 1506.

Rough seas prevented him from landing at that time. He named the main island after himself. Some sources suggest a Portuguese landing occurred in 1520. However, the first undisputed landing was in 1643. The crew of the Dutch ship Heemstede arrived then.

They made the first rough charts of the archipelago in 1656.

Scientific interest grew over the following centuries. In 1767, a French crew conducted the first full survey. They noted a large waterfall called Big Watron. In 1793, French naturalist Louis-Marie Aubert du Petit-Thouars visited.

He collected botanical samples and found traces of human habitation. He saw old fireplaces and gardens. These were likely left by Dutch explorers from the 1600s. Later, in 1810, Jonathan Lambert became the first permanent settler. He arrived from the United States. He called the islands the Islands of Refreshment.

Political changes shaped the islands during the 19th century. The United Kingdom annexed the islands in 1816. They sent a garrison to secure possession. This was done to prevent the islands from becoming a base for Napoleon Bonaparte. It also deterred the United States from using the islands for naval cruisers. By 1824, a small civilian community existed alongside the British Marines. The artist Augustus Earle was once stranded there for eight months.

In 1867, Prince Alfred visited the islands. The settlement was renamed Edinburgh of the Seven Seas to honor him. By 1856, the population had reached 97 residents.

Life on the islands has included moments of great hardship. In 1885, a tragedy occurred involving the ship West Riding.

Almost all the able-bodied men launched a lifeboat to trade with the ship. The lifeboat disappeared in rough seas. Fifteen men were lost in this event. In 1961, a volcanic eruption occurred near the village.

A parasitic cone of Queen Mary's Peak erupted. All 264 people had to be evacuated. They used local lobster-fishing boats to reach Nightingale Island safely.

The islands have served many important roles. During World War II, the Royal Navy used Tristan as a "stone frigate."

This means it served as a secret signals intelligence station. It helped monitor German U-boats and shipping in the South Atlantic. This period brought new infrastructure like a hospital and a school. Today, the islands are vital for biodiversity. You can find unique plants like the tree-fern.
