They are the only true arboreal macropods, which means they live in trees. While regular kangaroos live on the ground, these animals thrive in the canopy. They are very special because they have adapted to a life in the treetops. However, many species are now considered threatened in the wild.

Moving through the forest requires a special way of working. To climb, they wrap their front limbs around a tree trunk. They then use their powerful hind legs to hop upward. Scientists think they evolved from ancestors that lived on the rainforest floor. During the late Eocene, the land began to get much drier. This forced some ancestors to move into rockier places. These ancestors may have become rock-wallabies that could climb trees. During the Pleistocene, global cooling caused more drying in the region. This isolated groups of animals in small patches of rainforest. These isolated groups eventually evolved into the tree-kangaroos we see today.

Lumholtz's tree-kangaroo is the smallest of all the species. A male Lumholtz's tree-kangaroo weighs about 7.2 kg. Matschie's tree-kangaroo is larger, with males weighing up to 11 kg. The grizzled tree-kangaroo can weigh as much as 15 kg. Some species, like the Wondiwoi tree-kangaroo, were thought to be extinct until 2018.

Just like regular kangaroos, they are marsupials that use pouches. A baby, called a joey, stays in the pouch for a very long time. They also do not sweat to stay cool. Instead, they lick their forearms to let moisture evaporate. This is a way of staying cool called behavioural thermoregulation. They also face many of the same problems as other wild animals. Habitat loss from farming and logging is a very big threat to them.

This means they have adapted specifically for life in the trees. Most species live within the tropical rainforests of New Guinea. You can also find them in the islands of the region. To survive in the treetops, these animals have developed several physical adaptations. Their hind feet are much broader than those of terrestrial kangaroos. They also possess longer and more curved nails for gripping bark. The soles of their feet have a sponge-like grip. A large, pendulous tail provides enhanced balance during movement.

Moving through the forest involves a specific sequence of actions. When climbing, a tree-kangaroo wraps its forelimbs around a tree trunk. It allows the forelimbs to slide while it hops upward. This upward movement is powered by its strong hind legs. They are also expert leapers in the canopy. They can jump downward from one tree to another. They can even jump from heights of 15 meters to the ground without injury.

On the ground, their movement is quite different. They are considered slow and clumsy when they are not in trees. They move at approximately a human walking pace. They hop awkwardly by leaning their bodies far forward. This posture helps them balance their heavy tails while moving. To stay cool, they use a method called behavioural thermoregulation. Since they do not sweat, they lick their forearms to allow moisture to evaporate.

The evolutionary history of these animals is a complex process. Scientists believe they may have descended from a pademelon-like ancestor. This ancestor likely lived on the rainforest floor. During the late Eocene, the Australian and New Guinean continents began to dry. This caused rainforests to retreat. Ancestral pademelons then moved into drier, rockier environments. They may have evolved into rock-wallabies with generalist feeding strategies.

During the mid-Miocene, rock-wallabies adapted to new rainforest types from Asia. Some of these animals began spending more time climbing trees. By the Late Miocene, these semi-arboreal animals may have evolved into the extinct genus Bohra. Global cooling during the Pleistocene caused further drying and rainforest contraction. This isolated populations of Bohra into small, diverse rainforest fragments. These isolated groups eventually specialized into the modern Dendrolagus species.

There is significant variety in size and species among tree-kangaroos. Lumholtz's tree-kangaroo is the smallest species. An adult male of this species weighs about 7.2 kg. In contrast, the grizzled tree-kangaroo is much larger. Its males can weigh between 8 and 15 kg. Matschie's tree-kangaroo males weigh between 9 and 11 kg. The extinct D. noibano was even larger than any living species.

Reproduction in tree-kangaroos is a slow and careful process. Females reach sexual maturity at approximately 2.04 years of age. Males take longer, reaching maturity at 4.6 years. They have a very long offspring maturation period. A joey stays in the pouch for 246 to 275 days. Weaning occurs anywhere from 87 to 240 days after that.

Today, many tree-kangaroo species face serious threats. Habitat destruction is a primary concern for their survival. Logging and timber production destroy their homes. They also lose habitat to coffee, rice, and wheat production. Hunting by local communities also causes population declines. These changes make them more vulnerable to predators. The amethystine python is a natural predator that climbs into the trees. Feral domestic dogs also pose a threat in fragmented habitats.
