It must have at least one pair of parallel sides. These sides are called bases. The other two sides are the legs.

Names for this shape can change. In North America, people say trapezoid. In British English, they often say trapezium. This can be confusing. In 1795, a man named Charles Hutton swapped the names.

This mistake lasted a long time.

There are many kinds of trapezoids. An isosceles trapezoid has legs of equal length. Its base angles are also the same. A right trapezoid has two right angles. You can find the area of a trapezoid using its height. The height is the distance between the two bases. You can also use the midsegment to find the area. The midsegment is a line that connects the middle of each leg. It is parallel to the bases.

This shape shows up in real life, too. A rectangular building may look like a trapezoid in a photo. This is called the keystone effect.
