One branch goes 164 km to the Erdenet copper mine. Another branch goes 85 km to the Baganuur coal mine.

One of the most complex parts of this railway is the track gauge. The gauge is the distance between the two metal rails. In Russia and Mongolia, the tracks use a 1,520 mm Russian gauge. However, China uses a 1,435 mm standard gauge.

Because the widths are different, trains cannot simply roll from one country to the next. At the Erenhot station on the Chinese border, the railway changes from single-track to double-track. Here, workers use specialized equipment for a bogie exchange. A bogie is the heavy wheel frame located underneath a train car. By swapping these frames, the same train cars can transition to the different track widths.

Major stations and branch lines define the railway's structure. The main line includes stations at Naushki, Darkhan, Züünkharaa, Choir, Sainshand, and Zamyn-Üüd.

Another branch runs 85 km to the Baganuur coal mine. Other branches reach the Sharyngol coal mines, the Bor-Öndör fluorspar mine, and the Züünbayan oil refinery. These branches allow the railway to act as a lifeline for Mongolia's mining industry.

Development began in 1937 with a line from Ulan-Ude to Naushki. Construction toward Ulaanbaatar was delayed by World War II. That section was finally finished in November 1949. The full Trans-Mongolian line was completed in 1956. The Inner Mongolian leader Ulanhu officially opened it on 1 January 1956. The Soviet 505th Penal Unit helped build the line in Mongolia. In 1958, the system moved from older technology to diesel engines and automated switching.

Modernization has continued to change how the railway operates. In the 1990s, powerful American locomotives replaced some old Soviet models. Engineers also installed fiber-optic cables for better signaling and communication. Today, the 1,110 km Mongolian section is managed by the Ulaanbaatar Railway Company, or UBTZ. This is a joint-stock company owned equally by Russia and Mongolia. As of 2000, UBTZ operated 60 locomotives and 2,400 freight wagons. This includes 300 passenger cars and 140 container wagons.

The railway is essential to the Mongolian economy. In 1998, rail transport carried 96 percent of the country's freight. It also handled 55 percent of all passenger traffic. One famous service is the China Railway K3/4 train. This international service began in 1959. It provides a direct connection between the major cities of Beijing and Moscow. The railway makes such long-distance travel possible across vast distances.

Looking forward, there are many plans for new tracks. A 2010 plan proposed over 5,600 km of new lines. This included connecting Dalanzadgad and Choibalsan through several stages. Some of these lines would use the Russian gauge, while others would use the Chinese gauge. In 2023, a new line linking Züünbayan to Khangi was completed.
