It connects Port Augusta in South Australia to Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. This line crosses the huge Nullarbor Plain. It is the only rail corridor for freight between Western Australia and the eastern states. Because of this, the line is very important for the economy. The track is 1,693 miles long. It even includes the longest section of completely straight track in the world.

Building the railway was a massive job that took many years. In 1901, the Australian colonies joined to form a single nation. At that time, Perth was isolated from other states by thousands of kilometres of desert. People had to travel by sea across the rough Great Australian Bight. To fix this, leaders promised a railway to link the continent. Work started in Port Augusta in September 1912.

Workers built from both ends at once. The two sides finally met at Ooldea on 17 October 1917. At its peak, crews laid 11 miles of track in a single day.

Early engineers faced many hard jobs while running the trains. Steam locomotives needed a lot of water to work. However, the water in the desert bores had a high salt content. This salt caused major damage to the engine boilers. In fact, boiler repairs made up 87 per cent of all maintenance. To fix this, workers used barium carbonate water treatment plants. Later, the railway switched to diesel-electric locomotives in 1951.

This change helped the engines run much better.

As time passed, the railway changed to make travel easier. Until 1970, the tracks at each end used a different width. This was called a narrow gauge. In 1970, a project made the whole line a standard gauge. This meant trains could travel from Sydney to Perth without stopping.

In 2004, the connection between all mainland state capitals was finally finished. The railway is so special that Engineers Australia recognized its history in 2008. They placed markers at the stations in Port Augusta and Kalgoorlie.

Today, people use the railway for more than just moving goods. Two special passenger services offer amazing trips through the desert. One is called the Indian Pacific, which travels the entire length.

The other is The Ghan, which travels between Port Augusta and Tarcoola. These are experiential tourism services. This means they are designed to let people enjoy the scenery. You can see the vast desert and the straight tracks from your window. It is a unique way to see the heart of Australia.

It serves as the only rail freight corridor between Western Australia and the eastern states. Because of this role, the line is both economically and strategically vital. The railway is 1,693 miles long. It is famous for containing the world's longest section of completely straight track.

The history of the railway is tied to the birth of the Australian nation. In 1901, the six Australian colonies federated to form the Commonwealth of Australia. At that time, Perth was isolated from the other states by thousands of kilometres of desert. The only practical way to travel was by sea. This required voyages across the rough Great Australian Bight. These trips were often time-consuming and uncomfortable. To encourage Western Australia to join the federation, leaders promised a federally funded railway. In 1907, legislation allowed for a route survey. The survey was finished in 1909 and suggested a path through Tarcoola. Construction officially began in Port Augusta in September 1912.

Building the track was a monumental feat of engineering. Work proceeded from both ends toward the middle. Crews moved eastwards from Kalgoorlie and westwards from Port Augusta. This work continued through the years of the First World War. At its peak, workers laid 11 miles of track in a single day. This remains an Australian tracklaying record. By 1915, the two ends of the line were only 110 miles apart. The two halves finally met at Ooldea on 17 October 1917. The total cost was estimated at £4,045,000. In modern terms, this is equivalent to roughly $800 million.

Operating the railway in a desert presented unique mechanical challenges. Early trains used steam locomotives, which require large amounts of water. However, the water found in desert bores had a high mineral salt content. This salt caused severe damage to the locomotive boilers. In fact, boiler repairs accounted for 87 per cent of all locomotive maintenance. Engineers eventually solved this by using barium carbonate water treatment plants.

To avoid these water issues, the original engineer, Henry Deane, suggested using diesel locomotives. Although the technology was not well-developed then, the railway eventually switched to diesel-electric locomotives in 1951.

The railway has also undergone significant changes in its track structure. For many years, the line used different track widths at each end. These were known as narrow-gauge lines. This meant passengers and freight had to change trains to continue their journey. In 1970, a major project completed the standardisation of the line. This turned the railway into a key part of the Sydney–Perth rail corridor. By 2004, the standard-gauge connection between all mainland state capitals was finally closed. This was achieved through connections between Port Pirie, Adelaide, and Melbourne.

This allowed for much more efficient travel across the country.

Today, the railway is used for both heavy freight and special tourism. Two major passenger services operate on the line. The Indian Pacific is an experiential tourism service that travels the entire length of the railway. The Ghan is another service that runs between Port Augusta and Tarcoola. From Tarcoola, The Ghan leaves the line to head north toward Darwin.

These trains allow travelers to experience the unique scenery of the Australian interior. The railway also remains a vital lifeline for moving goods across the continent.

Maintaining such a long line in a harsh environment requires modern technology. The railway uses crossing loops to allow trains to pass one another. These loops are at least 1,500 meters long and spaced about 30 miles apart. Many of these loops are unattended. Train crews use radio controls to set the track points as they approach. Some locomotives even use an activated points system (ICAPS) to set the route without stopping.

Despite these advances, the desert can still cause disruptions. Flooding and "washaways" can remove the ballast, which is the stone base under the tracks. These events can render parts of the railway inoperable, requiring significant repairs to restore the line.
