Traditions are things people do or believe.

A tradition is a system of beliefs or behaviors passed down through a group of people.

Many traditions work by being taught from one generation to the next.

The word tradition comes from the Latin word "tradere."
There are many different types of traditions found around the world.
Traditions are not frozen in time and can change quite a bit.
A tradition is a system of beliefs or behaviors passed down within a group or society. These customs carry symbolic meaning or special significance because of their origins in the past. Traditions can include holidays or even impractical clothing, such as military officers' spurs or lawyers' wigs. They can also encompass social norms, like how people greet one another. While many traditions are ancient, some are invented on purpose for political or cultural reasons.
The mechanism of tradition involves the transmission of ideas or objects through time. Originally, many traditions were passed down through oral tradition. This means people used spoken words, epic stories, or poetic devices like rhyme and alliteration to remember information. This allowed knowledge to survive without a writing system. Later, written traditions emerged to preserve information more formally.
Traditions exist in many distinct forms and scales. They can be religious, such as the customs maintained by denominations in Christianity or Islam. They can also be national, involving things like national anthems or federal holidays in the United States. Some traditions are small and personal, such as family traditions at Christmas or a company picnic. Others are social, involving rituals like sending birth announcements or saying "thank you."
The word tradition comes from the Latin word *tradere*. This word literally means to transmit, to hand over, or to give for safekeeping. In Roman law, the term originally referred to legal transfers and inheritance. The modern meaning we use today evolved during the Enlightenment period. This was often in opposition to the concepts of modernity and progress.
Some traditions are not ancient but are actually "invented traditions." This term was introduced by E. J. Hobsbawm to describe new practices that imply a connection to the past. For example, the white wedding dress became a popular tradition only after Queen Victoria wore one. Many traditions associated with the United Kingdom's monarchy actually date back to the 19th century. In colonial Africa, occupying forces sometimes invented traditions to legitimize their own political positions.
Traditions are not static; they change slowly over time. Because these changes happen gradually from one generation to the next, people may not notice them. A change can become so accepted that it is viewed as part of the ancient tradition itself. However, traditions face threats from modern forces. Industrialization, globalization, and the marginalization of cultural groups can cause traditions to be lost. In response, many countries have started initiatives to preserve traditions, such as protecting traditional languages.
Various academic fields study the concept of tradition. Anthropologists study tradition within traditional societies, while archaeologists look at sets of cultures that develop from one another. Historians and sociologists also examine how these customs shape society. In the sciences, philosophers like Karl Popper suggested that scientists inherit a "tradition" of previous research and conclusions. This inherited knowledge allows new scientists to build upon the work of those who came before them.
