This sport falls under the broader umbrella of athletics. Outside the United States, the term athletics can refer to track and field alone. It can also include road running, cross country, and race walking. This sport allows people to test the limits of human physical expression.

Winning a track and field event depends on the specific discipline. In foot racing, the objective is to complete the course in the least amount of time.

Some athletes compete in combined events known as multi-events. These include the pentathlon with five events, the heptathlon with seven, and the decathlon with ten.

Most track and field competitions are individual contests. A single victor is declared for each event. However, relay races offer a prominent way to compete as a team. These relays typically feature teams of four athletes. One exception to gender-segregated events is the mixed relay. In these races, a four-person team consists of two men and two women. If a race has too many participants to run at once, officials use preliminary heats. These heats narrow down the field of athletes for the final rounds.

Track and field is one of the oldest sports in human history. It has prehistoric roots because running, jumping, and throwing are universal human actions.

The first recorded organized events were the Ancient Olympic Games in Greece. The Ancient Olympic pentathlon was a major step toward the modern sport. It included the long jump, javelin throw, discus throw, a stadion footrace, and wrestling.

These games later spread to Rome around 210 BC. In the Middle Ages, new events developed in Northern Europe. For example, Celtic societies in Ireland and Scotland held stone put and weight throw competitions. These were precursors to the modern shot put and hammer throw.

Modern organized competitions began to emerge in the 19th century. These were often held by military groups, sports clubs, or educational institutions. The Royal Shrewsbury School holds a very long history in the sport. Its running club has records dating back to 1831.

The school also organized the Second Spring Meeting in 1840. This was one of the oldest track and field meetings still in existence. In 1851, the Wenlock Olympian Games were held at Much Wenlock racecourse. These early organized meets helped transition the sport into its modern form.

Governing bodies eventually formed to manage rules and international competition. The Amateur Athletic Association was established in 1880 in Britain. This group helped codify the rules of the sport. In 1912, the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF) was created. This body served as the international governing organization for athletics.

Today, World Athletics is the international governing body. It oversees prestigious competitions like the World Athletics Championships and the Olympic Games. Officials keep strict records of world, continental, and national performances. If an athlete violates any rules, they are disqualified and their marks are erased.

Historically, the sport has seen significant shifts in participation. Until the early 1920s, track and field was almost exclusively for men. In the late 1800s, women's participation was very limited. Many institutions believed walking was more appropriate for women than running.

However, women fought for inclusion through organized movements. Alice Milliat helped found the International Women's Sports Federation in 1921. Her efforts led to the Women's World Games. By the 1928 Summer Olympics, women were finally able to compete in five track and field events. Now, the sport is a global stage for athletes of all genders.
