Some bullets leave a bright trail in the sky. These are called tracers.

A tracer is a bullet with a tiny light inside. This light is in a small part at the back.

The part at the back has a special mix of metals and salts. When the gun fires, the powder ignites the mix. This makes the bullet glow very brightly as it flies.

Tracers help people in many ways. A shooter can see the path of the bullet. This helps them aim better. Tracers also act as a signal. They can show other soldiers where to shoot.

Different mixes make different colors. In the United States, many tracers glow red. This happens because of a salt called strontium. Other countries may use different salts to make green light. There are also dim tracers. These are hard to see with the naked eye. They are easy to see with night-vision gear. This helps soldiers stay hidden in the dark.
